Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) System is a high energy, inert gas welding process.
Argon is basically used for arc plasma supply, powder transport and molten material shielding. It produces a very high quality deposit offering optimal protection with minimal dilution or deformation of the base material.
It is a process that deposits very precise coatings of perfectly controlled alloys on mechanical parts that are subject to intense wear; significantly extending their service life.
PTA technology is particularly effective in protection against corrosion, thermal shock and abrasion.
A wide range of overlay alloys is available for practically any part.
Some alloys are very hard; others are softer with hard abrasion-resistant particles dispersed in a matrix. Certain alloys are made to rebuild a part of required dimension while others are designed to be a final overlay that protects the work surface.

PlasmaCutting Machine consist of Power source with controls, Water Re-circulating system if required and a well designed Torch. The basic principle is that the arc formed between the electrodes and the work piece is constricted by a fine bore, copper nozzle. This increases the temperature and velocity of the plasma emitting from the nozzle. The temperature of the plasma is in excess of 20, 000C and the velocity can approach the speed of sound. When used for cutting, the plasma gas flow is increased so that the deeply penetrating plasma jet cuts through the material and molten material is removed in the efflux plasma.

Submerged Arc Welder

An arc is maintained between the end of a bare wire electrode and the work. As the electrode is melted, it is fed into the arc by a set of rolls, driven by a governed motor. Wire feed speed is automatically controlled to equal the rate at which the electrode is melted, thus arc length is constant (similar to MIGMAG - constant voltage). The arc operates under a layer of granular flux, hence submerged arc. Some of the flux melts to provide a protective blanket over the weld pool. The remainder of the flux is unaffected and can be recovered and re-used, provided it is dry and not contaminated.

Plasma Cutting Electrodes

Every time an arc is struck the electrode receives a high current surge that brings it from a cold state to an extremely hot state very quickly. The ionized plasma gas flowing past the electrode is full of charged particles . These particles pull away atoms from the hot surface of the electrode which wears away the emitting element and creates a pit in the surface.

The number of starts and stops is more important than actual cutting time in establishing the life of the electrode. It is important to keep an eye on your consumables to know how to evaluate when they need changing. To tell if an electrode is spent, check the pit in the electrode element (the element is the silver-colored insert held in the copper: hafnium for air and O2, tungsten for N2 or Ar-H2). Generally, the pit should not exceed 2.5mm for air and O2 and 3.2mm for N2 or Ar-H2. Electrodes should be changed in time to prevent possibly serious damage to the torch if the electrode bursts inside.

Inverter Welder

AC electrodes are frequently operated with the simple, single phase transformer with current adjusted by means of tappings or sliding core control. DC rectifiers and ACDC transformer-rectifiers are controlled electronically, for example by thyristors. A new generation of power sources called inverters is available. These use transistors to convert mains AC (50Hz) to a high frequency AC (over 500 Hz) before transforming down to a voltage suitable for welding and then rectifying to DC. Because high frequency transformers can be relatively small, principal advantages of inverter power sources are undoubtedly their size and weight when the source must be portable. Electrode holder and cables The electrode holder clamps the end of the electrode with copper contact shoes built into its head. The shoes are actuated by either a twist grip or spring-loaded mechanism. The clamping mechanism allows for quick release of the stub end. For efficiency the electrode has to be firmly clamped into the holder, otherwise poor electrical contact may cause arc instability through voltage fluctuations. Welding cable connecting the holder to the power source is mechanically crimped or solderedIt is essential that good electrical connections are maintained between electrode, holder and cable. With poor connections, resistance heating and, in severe cases, minor arcing with the torch body will cause the holder to overheat. Two cables are connected to the output of the power source, the welding lead goes to the electrode holder and the current return lead is clamped to the workpiece. The latter is often wrongly referred to as the earthlead. A separate earth lead is normally required to provide protection from faults in the power source. The earth cable should therefore be capable of carrying the maximum output current of the power source.

Tig Welder

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding became an overnight success in the 1940s for joining

magnesium and aluminium. Using an inert gas shield instead of a slag to protect the weldpool, the process was a highly attractive replacement for gas and manual metal are welding. TIG has played a major role in the acceptance of aluminium for high quality welding and structural applications. The process may employ direct current with positive or negative electrode or alternating current. In general, ac is preferred for welding aluminum and magnesium. Direct current electrode negative is preferred for welding most other materials and for automatic welding of thick aluminum. Thin magnesium sometimes is welded with direct current electrode positive. When ac is used with argon shielding, an arc cleaning action is produced at the joint surfaces on aluminum and magnesium. This cleaning action removes oxides and is particularly beneficial in reducing weld porosity when welding aluminum. When using dc, helium may be used as the shielding gas to produce deeper penetration. However, stringent precleaning of aluminum and magnesium parts is required with helium shielding. Argon and helium mixtures for gas shielding can provide some of the benefits of both gases.

Regardless of polarity, a constant current (essentially vertical volt-ampere characteristic) welding power source is required. In addition, a high-frequency oscillator is generally incorporated in power sources designed for GTAW. High-frequency can be employed with dc to initiate the arc instead of touch starting to minimize tungsten electrode contamination. Normally, the high frequency is turned off automatically after arc ignition. The high frequency power is normally operated continuously with ac to maintain ionization of the arc path as the arc voltage passes through zero.
