Block printing is an ancient Indian textile hand craft tradition that has been kept alive in Rajasthan. The wood-blocks are hand carved in elaborate designs, each colour is printed with a different block to complete the motif. A high degree of skill is required for both the placement of motifs and the application of pressure. Colours used for printing are derived from non toxic chemicals, minerals and vegetable origin. A block printed cloth reflects the touch of the human hand, the sensibility and skill of the craftsman; every piece unique. In recent years, hand block printing within India has generated an enormous amount of interest, yet there has been relatively little information published or no public facility that can provide information about its history or current existence. For some time, the craft has existed at a crucial juncture needing an impetus on several fronts; new design directions, improved technology and enhanced skills to counter balance the onslaught of machine printed fabrics.GM Fashion World constantly seeks to create an environment in which traditional textiles have their place and value and to build a symbiotic relationship between the market and the design product - between skill and tradition.
