Ahimsa Silk also known as Peace silk is usually made from Eri and Tassar Silk cocoons. Ahimsa silk is made is an eco-friendly way. The cocoons are left as it is for a week or 10 days. When the worms are fully grown they fly away. In this technique there is no cruelty done to the silkworms while producing or collecting silk cocoons. It got its name from a Hindi word Ahimsa which means Non-violence. This method does not kill the silkworms to extract silk. Hence Ahimsa describes the process of obtaining silk.
However, because the moths break the fibers as they emerge from their cocoons, the fibers are spun into slubby threads with neps throughout the length instead of reeled. The fabric has some amazing medical properties, is anti-inflammatory and bio-degradable. Although, Ahimsa Silk is not as strong as reeled, but it is warmer and softer.

This fiber is recycled and not carded or processed into roving or batt form. This fiber is created as a byproduct of Sari production in India. The bright colors are a wonderful addition to a spinning or felting project.

Silk noil may also be made from the short fibres, directly sourced from the silkworm cocoons. Rather than the continuous length of silk, shorter fibers, which are generally not used to create high quality silk are used for Silk Noil, which has a slightly rough texture. It is relatively weaker and has low resilience. It tends to have very low lustre, which makes it appear more like cotton than silk.
Noil Silk, however short its fibres may be, though, has the advantage of being made from protein. Thus, it has a better texture and depth that cotton and gives a nice fall and drape.
Silk Noil is also blended or appended with heavier fabrics like velvets and satins to create varied textures. Made out of the strongest natural fibres (with a protein base) around, the Noil Sarees are not slippery like synthetic fibres and absorb moisture well. Noils are easily dyed, and can also be made waterproof, by using a polyurethane coating. This also increases their usage in furnishings industry.
This fiber is obtained after bleaching and all the Sericin is removed. All the gum from the fiber is removed. You can dye it in any color. It is very soft and can easily be spun with other fibers.
