A biogas plant is a plant where biogas is generated by fermenting biomass. The plant typically relies on anaerobic digestion in which waste (biomass) is digested by microbes to release methane gas (biogas). With this process, the biomass is converted into bio-fertilizer or manure that is used in agricultural farms and the biogas released from the biogas plant is used as fuel.
Biogas is comprised mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. It also consists of smaller amounts of nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, oxygen, and methyl mercaptans.
A biogas plant is commonly used for the treatment of industrial and municipal organic waste, sewage sludge, and agricultural biomass and to convert them into renewable energy. The biofertilizer can be used in agriculture. Biogas can be used as fuel. In the same process, heat and electricity are also produced in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant.
