The two rival groups representing the two divisions of Thrissur Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi viy with each other in making the display of fireworks grander and more colourful. Inside the temple, in the Alangara Mandapa, musical pillars are carved out of a single granite block, with the sounds of different musical instruments like mridanga, sitar, tambura, and jalataranga. The huge divine Nandi bull carved in white stone and Lord Hanuman's 18 ft statue are noteworthy.

    Belur - Located on the banks of the river Yagachi, Belur is a quaint hamlet famous for its exquisite temples. In fact it is also known as Dakshina Varanasi or Southern Banaras. Its celebrated temple of Channakeshava was built by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 A.D. to commemorate his conversion from Jainism to Vaishnavism. The main structure of the temple, which is star-shaped, is a homogeneous architectural unit on a raised platform. Carved out of black stone the temple looks as if it had been skillfully crafted out of metal. At the entrance the winged figure of Lord Vishnu's carrier Garuda stands guard and the 650 elephants on the frieze around the walls outside are all different from each other. The exotic bracket figures on the walls portray the artistic and architectural talent prevalent in India even all those centuries ago.

    The Shennakeshava temple

    The intricate Shennakeshava temple took 103 years to complete. Filled with sculptures and frescoes it truly is an architectural marvel and also one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture.

    Halebid

    Halebid 27 kms north-west of Hassan is popular for its strikingly beautiful Hoysala Temples and Jain shrines. The Hoysaleshwara temple, stands on a platform like a casket and is richly endowed with some of the most detailed scrollwork in stone. Its walls are covered with an endless variety of gods and goddesses, animals, birds and dancing girls. Yet no two facets of the temple are the same. This magnificent temple is guarded by a statue of Nandi the Bull. Despite 86 years of labour the construction of the temple never got completed. Another famous temple here is the Keddareshwara temple.

    Shravanbelagola

    Wedged between two stark rocky hills, this legendary pilgrim center and shrine of the Jain's since early times is 51 kms south-east of Hassan. The monolithic, 27 m. high statue of Lord Bahubali is situated here. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival, an elaborate ritual, held here once every 12 years attracts thousands of devotees. During the festival the 1000 year old statue is anointed with milk, curds, ghee, saffron, and gold coins. The last Mahamastakabhisheka was held in 2005 A.D. Just opposite to Shravanbelagola is the smaller Chandragiri hill, where some ancient Jain temples and the tomb of Chandragupta Maurya, a famous patron of Jainism resides.

    Chikmagloor

    Is nestled in the nearby Baba Budan hills, a calm, serene town full hills, valleys, streams and snow-white coffee blossoms it is a trekkers delight.

  • Thrissur pooram Festival :- The Pooram Festival celebrated in the month of April May sees the town come alive with a spectacular procession of decorated elephants, cultural shows, dance and music competitions, prayer, worship, percussion performances and other colorful fiestas. The two rival groups representing the two divisions of Thrissur Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi viy with each other in making the display of fireworks grander and more colourful. Each group is allowed to display a maximum of fifteen elephants and all efforts are made by each party to secure the best elephants in South India and the most artistic parasols, several kinds of which are raised on the elephants during the display. The celebrations begin early in the morning and carry on till the wee hours of the next day. Inside the temple, in the Alangara Mandapa, musical pillars are carved out of a single granite block, with the sounds of different musical instruments like mridanga, sitar, tambura, and jalataranga.     Kodaikanal

    Rameshwaram

    Rameswaram lies in the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu and is often termed as the 'Varanasi of the South'. Legend has it that Sri Rama halted here after his return from Lanka and worshipped Lord Shiva to do penance for having killed Ravana.This temple city is famous for the several Hindu temples devoted to Lord Rama, who, it is belived, had arrived on the shores of Rameswaram and built a stone bridge across Palk Strait to reach Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana.   • Gandhamadhana Parvatham :- It is the most elevated point of Rameswaram and is located in the north-west of Ramanathaswami temple. It is a two storied structure with a ruined fort. Hanuman is believed to have leapt from this point across the sea to reach Lanka. One can see the footprints of Lord Rama here.

  • Kurusadai Island :-The island is situated on the west of the Pamban bridge and is thronged by the marine biologists for research and observation. It is 20 km from Rameswaram via Mandapam. The island is famous for coral reefs and houses a wide variety of sea creatures in its reefs.

  • Kothandaramaswamy Temple :- This Lord Vishnu temple stands at the southern tip of Rameswaram in Dhanushkodi. It is the only temple structure that survived the 1964 cyclones. The temple houses beautiful idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanumana. Legend has it that Vibeeshana, the brother of Ravana is said to have surrendered to Rama here.

  • Rock Fort Temple :- This temple complex built by the Pallavas houses three temples carved out of a rock mountain. Built by the Pallavas and substantially constructed by Nayaks, this Rock Fort stands on a huge 83 m high rock and is devoted to Lord Shiva as Kangaala Moorthy.

  • Srirangam :-10 km from Trichy, this is a picturesque island ringed by the river Cauvery and also a fascinating temple town. This superb Sri Ranganathaswami Temple complex is probably the largest in India. This Sreerangam temple has 21 magnificent towers which were built around the 13th and 14th centuries and is surrounded by seven walls. Mohini Alangaram, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Garuda Seva, Flower Festival and the Car Festival during the last week of December and first week of January are the important festivals of Srirangam.

    About Hassan

    Belur - Located on the banks of the river Yagachi, Belur is a quaint hamlet famous for its exquisite temples. In fact it is also known as Dakshina Varanasi or Southern Banaras. Its celebrated temple of Channakeshava was built by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 A.D. to commemorate his conversion from Jainism to Vaishnavism. The main structure of the temple, which is star-shaped, is a homogeneous architectural unit on a raised platform. Carved out of black stone the temple looks as if it had been skillfully crafted out of metal. At the entrance the winged figure of Lord Vishnu's carrier Garuda stands guard and the 650 elephants on the frieze around the walls outside are all different from each other. The exotic bracket figures on the walls portray the artistic and architectural talent prevalent in India even all those centuries ago.

    The Shennakeshava temple

    The intricate Shennakeshava temple took 103 years to complete. Filled with sculptures and frescoes it truly is an architectural marvel and also one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture.

    Halebid

    Halebid 27 kms north-west of Hassan is popular for its strikingly beautiful Hoysala Temples and Jain shrines. The Hoysaleshwara temple, stands on a platform like a casket and is richly endowed with some of the most detailed scrollwork in stone. Its walls are covered with an endless variety of gods and goddesses, animals, birds and dancing girls. Yet no two facets of the temple are the same. This magnificent temple is guarded by a statue of Nandi the Bull. Despite 86 years of labour the construction of the temple never got completed. Another famous temple here is the Keddareshwara temple.

    Shravanbelagola

    Wedged between two stark rocky hills, this legendary pilgrim center and shrine of the Jain's since early times is 51 kms south-east of Hassan. The monolithic, 27 m. high statue of Lord Bahubali is situated here. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival, an elaborate ritual, held here once every 12 years attracts thousands of devotees. During the festival the 1000 year old statue is anointed with milk, curds, ghee, saffron, and gold coins. The last Mahamastakabhisheka was held in 2005 A.D. Just opposite to Shravanbelagola is the smaller Chandragiri hill, where some ancient Jain temples and the tomb of Chandragupta Maurya, a famous patron of Jainism resides.

    Chikmagloor

    Is nestled in the nearby Baba Budan hills, a calm, serene town full hills, valleys, streams and snow-white coffee blossoms it is a trekkers delight.

    Koramangala

    Just 10 kms from Hassan it is has a hugely famous Shiva temple.

    Hampi

    Hampi is situated at an altitude of 467 m above sea level and was founded by Harihara I also known as Hukka and Bukka, the Tamil princes. This World Heritage Site served as the capital of the largest Hindu empire- the Vijayanagar empire. During the reign of famous ruler Krishnadevaraya in the early 16th century, Hampi prospered the most and marked growth in the fields of arts, architecture, literature and military warfare.   • Patal Lingeswar :- This temple was discovered during one of the excavations carried out by the British. It is believed that Lord Shiva was the presiding diety of this temple.

  • Lotus Mahal :-Today it has turned to archaelogical musuem and houses a good number of artefacts which were discovered in the excavations since 1976. It remained the resting place for the kings in the past.

    Summers are hot and dry with temperature touching to 45 degree celsius in April. Southwest monsoons bring heavy rains which continue for several days and sometimes weeks in Hampi.

    How to reach

    Hospet is an ideal base for visiting the ruined city of Hampi. As Hampi does not have a railhead one have to get to the Hospet railway station, which is well connected by trains to Bangalore, Hubli and Vijapur. The nearest airport to Hampi is at Bellary(75 km). Hampi has a good road network with the main bus terminal in the Hampi Bazaar. From here buses ply to all major cities of Karnataka.
