Steel Tubes.Lighter and Stronger AISI 4130 - steel. A low alloy steel is used in oil patch applications and used widely as an aircraft steel. 4130 is an oil and gas steel grade with a lower carbon content than 4140 giving 4130 improved weldability, the trade off is reduced through thickness strength. 4130 has a low resistance to corrosion. 4130 can also be used to make car connecting rods, shafts, fittings, and engine mounting lugs, bushes, gears, axles, bolts, gas cylinders, airframe components, hydraulic lines and nitrided machinery parts. Typical range of hardness is 90-96 Rockwell B.
The 41xx family of steel includes chromium and molybdenum and are often referred to as chromoly steel or chrome-moly. Chromoly steels have an excellent strength to weight ratio but do not contain sufficient quantities to provide the levels of corrosion resistance found in stainless steels. These steel are often used in aircraft parts also frequently used within the gas and oil industry also in Chassis of F car.
Approximate equivalents : 25CrMo4, DIN 1.7218, 30CrMo, 708A25, 708M25, 30CrMo, SCM430
Formulae to Calculate weight of 4130 Tube or Pipe :
Weight of S.S. Pipe :
O.D. ( mm ) – W Thick ( mm ) X W.Thick ( mm ) X 0.024866 = Wt. Per Mtr.
O.D. ( mm ) – W Thick ( mm ) X W.Thick ( mm ) X 0.00756 = Wt. Per Mtr.

Grade 409 is a titanium stabilised ferritic stainless steel. Although regarded as a general-purpose chromium stainless steel the primary application for Grade 409 is automotive exhaust systems. Its applications are those where appearance is a secondary consideration to mechanical properties. Grade 409 resists atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust will form in moist atmospheres; this rust retards further corrosion but makes the surface undesirable for decorative applications. The corrosion resistance is about the same as that of 3CR12 and the 12% chromium martensitic grades such as 410, and inferior to the 17% chromium grade 430. Generally 409 is classified as resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and up to 675°C in continuous service, but these temperatures are dependent upon the exact service environment. Annealing - heat to 790-900°C and air cool. This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment. More highly stabilised versions of 409 are useful where 409 has been proven marginal - these grades S40910, S40920 and S40930 are stabilised with titanium, niobium or both titanium and niobium.
