What is Plasma?

Plasma is commonly known as fourth state of matter after solid liquid and gas. This is extremely hot substance which consists of free electronics, positive irons, atorns and molecules. It conducts electricity.

How is it generated?

Plasma can be generated by various means. However for industrial applications plasma is generated in a suitably designed gun called Plasma gun or plasma torch. Suitable gas or air is passed through the annular space between electrode and nozzle which ionizes the gas or air which wooses out of the nozzle orifice as plasma.

How Plasma is utilized for Cutting?

Plasma cutting process is basically an Arc cutting process. Cathod of a suitable D.C. power source is connected to the electrode of the plasma gun and the Anode of the same power source is connected to the job or metal to be cut. As the plasma wooses out the nossle and touches the jon an arc is established between the electrode and the job through the nozzle orfice. The temperature of the arc depends upon the Current per unit cross-sectional area of the arc or the current density of the arc. The temperature of Air Plasma arc goes as high as 30, 000 degree C. Hence Plasma is utilised to establish highly constricted arc, which cuts the metal.

What is the Priciple of Cutting?

After the arc is established cutting takes place by melting the metal under the kerf of the cutting. Energy required for cutting is supplied by the power source. Energy required for cutting (melting) may be expressed mathematically as under:

S = Specific heat of the material
T = Temperature difference between ambient and melting.

Please Note: This energy is supplied by the power source. Plasma by iitself does not contribute any considerable amount of energy in cutting process. Please note here that if the capacity of the power source is more it will require less time to meet the energy requirement E. Also Energy absorbed by the material will be less as the time available is less. Hence it is important to have optimum rating of the power source for best performance.
