In this type of heat pipe, the wick is in the form of metal mesh that is inserted into the pipe and made to be in contact with the inner walls of the pipe to facilitate capillary action. This type of wick is used in the majority of the mainstream products and provides readily variable characteristics in terms of power transport and orientation sensitivity, according to the number of layers and mesh counts used.

Consequently, these thermal siphons have severe limitation on their orientation of working; that is - the evaporator end of the thermal siphon has to be below the level of condenser end for the thermal siphon to work (transfer the heat under load).

Axially grooved thermal siphons or thermo-siphons use a circle of grooves in the interior wall of the heat pipe envelope as the wick efficiently pulls condensate back to the evaporator from the cooler surfaces where working fluid had condensed.
