  Energy storage in batteries or chemical fuels such as hydrogen or synthetic natural gas (produced through water electrolysis) will be crucial to the worldwide large scale deployment of fluctuating renewable energies. As the use of renewable energies grow and technologies mature, the market for storage will gradually increase, offering strong first-mover advantages to a range of potential stakeholders. Among the different technologies that can be deployed as energy storage,   Redox flow batteries   and   electrochemical generation of hydrogen    have been identified as “strategic” At De Nora, we are therefore focusing our R&D on: pure flow batteries (hydrogen / bromine, and other redox couples), hybrid flow batteries (zinc / bromine) metal / air batteries. Regarding water electrolysis, strong efforts are currently being made on   Alkaline Water Electrolysis   for medium – large scale installations (> ≈ 50 Nm³/h as hydrogen generation capacity).

Reducing the risk of infection transmission In a world where high-density living in urban areas is increasing, and healthcare and the spreading of pandemics are among top concerns, the role of the cleaning industry is of great importance, though often underestimated. Our commitment is to promote technological advancements for better standards of cleanliness, to help reducing the risk of infection transmission within public spaces.  We develop small-scale systems for the  on-site production of sodium hypochlorite  solutions, an effective  sanitizer  to be employed on several surfaces, including frequent-hand touch sites. Different sizes of user-friendly devices, based on electro-chemical technology, generate ready-to-use sanitizing products in different concentrations from simple elements such as water, salt and electricity.   In  healthcare settings  the importance of cleaning and sanitizing is widely recognized and normally enforced. Yet nosocomial infections still represent a main cause of illnesses with extremely high costs for taxpayers. Winning with electrode design to reduce energy costs in traditional processes and UAT™ Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane Filtration Systems to meet any tap or brackish application need. Nickel and cobalt production,   precious  metal refining (gold, silver), recovery of copper from bleed streams or valuable metals from industrial wastewater, are some of the applications of our titanium DSA® anodes. Large quantities of water are required in sufficiently high quality for all areas of mine operations from exploration, mining, processing, smelting and refining. Today, many man-made structures using steel face harsh futures from the ravages of their natural enemy-corrosion. The cost of corrosion has proven to be almost incalculable as it shortens the life of almost any structure using steel. De Nora’s cathodic protection anodes, marketed under the trade names of LIDA® and ELGARD®, provide customers with a solution to this problem.  Whether your structure requiring protection is a gas pipeline, a steel tank or a re-enforced concrete deck, De Nora produces a cathodic protection anode for your application, both LIDA® and ELGARD® lines of CP anodes are commercialized mainly through a network of licensed distributors or authorized customers. Concrete Protection Cathodic protection of steel re-enforced concrete structures such as parking garages, bridge decks, and wharf and pier structures is found under the brand name  LIDA®.   Conventional Protection Anodes for the cathodic protection of industrial steel structures such as pipelines, underground storage tanks, above ground storage tanks, locks, dams, offshore platforms and water boxes are marketed under the LIDA® brand name. All offshore structures, platforms and pipelines require a comprehensive, on-going plan to mitigate the corrosion caused by the seawater environment. Over time and as the structures age the legacy cathodic protection systems require refurbushment in order to extend the useful life of the structure. This life extension requirement can range from 5 to 20 years. A cathodic protection system such as the LIDA TSA® (Tensioned String Anode) is comprised of mixed metal oxide anodes that can be specifically designed to deliver the performance needed to extend the life of any offshore structure.
