The Shrinkage Limit of a soil is defined as the moisture content after which any further reduction of moisture will not cause volume reduction. The shrinkage of clayey soil can be very significant. A fully saturated soil specimen is allowed to dry in free air and its volume is measured repeatedly by immersing in a mercury bath. From the data obtained from this test, Shrinkage Limit, Shrinkage Ratio, Shrinkage Index and Volumetric Shrinkage can be calculated.
The choice of puddle-clay materials is often governed by the results obtained from this test.

This equipment is used for determining unconfined compressivestrength of intact rock core specimens. The rock sample is cut tolength and the ends are machined flat. The specimen is placed in aloading frame and if required heated to the desired test temperature.Axial load is continuously increased on the specimen unit peak loadand failure are obtained.
High Pressure Permeability Test can be conducted on different sizespecimens using different cells. Each cell is made of steel andprovided with a top plate and funnel at the bottom having gasketseals held in position through bolts and nuts. The concretespecimens are sealed in the cell to prevent any leakage along theside walls. The permeated water is collected in glass bottlesattached at the bottom.
Each test stall has its own control system, operating pressuregauges and valves. The multi-unit permeameters are so designedthat all tests can be performed at the same time using either thesame head or varying head pressure as each test stall is providedwith its own pressure regulator and control. The controlinstruments are mounted on a sturdy welded structural stand. Allmulti-units are provided with end pressure gauge: Each unit is
