Gayatri bio-organics limited (gbl) is incorporated on 2nd december 1991 to setup manufacturing of sorbitol by using imported technology in technical collaboration with lurgi, germany. in the year 1998 gayatri bio-organics has gone for backwards integration and started 150 mtpd of maize crushing plant. The company is promoted by mr.t.v.sandeep kumar reddy, s/o dr.t.subbarami reddy presently rajya sabha m.p. gbl is part of gayatri group of companies. the group is in the business of infrastructure and civil construction, sugar and hospitality. it is one of the largest manufacturing units of starch, liquid glucose sorbitol and its allied products in south india with a wide distribution network across the country. Gbl is located in medak district of andhra pradesh, 65 km from hyderabad. The current capacity of the plant is 8550 mtpa. The company has expanded its capacities of sorbitol from 8550 tpa to 17000 tpa and maize crushing from 54000 mtpa to 135000 mtpa. the present capacity after expansion at medak plant is maize crushing capacity 90000 mtpa and sorbitol manufacturing capacity is 15000 mtpa. The company acquired it’s second unit , a starch plant, at biccavole, godawari dist, andhra pradesh with an installed maize crusing capacity of 45000 mts per annum. by expanding the existing unit at nandikandi with an additional capacity 45000 mts per annum and acquiring another unit at biccavole, the company has enhanced the total crushing capacity to 135000 mts per annum. products of the company: the company mainly manufactures the starch, sorbitol and by-products from maize. The product details are explained below: 1) starch: starch is an abundant carbohydrate distributed worldwide in plants. Starch has been a major ingredient in man's diet over the centuries. In addition it has become a major industrial raw material. Plant seeds, roots and tubers are all sources of industrial starch production. The commercial realities of the starch recovery process limit the industrial sources mainly to wheat, maize and tapioca. Indian starch industry mainly consumes maize as input raw material. Also some industries are tapioca based. The starch produced from corn is known as corn starch. Starch is made from endosperm portion of corn kernel. Corn starch is also called as maize starch, cornflour etc. It is a white, tasteless and odorless powder that is insoluble in cold water, alcohol or any other solvent. It is used as thickening, stiffening and gluing agent in many products. Maize (corn) contains about 70% starch, other components being protein, fibers and fat. The basis of the maize milling process is the separation of the maize kernel into its different parts. Maize starch is produced by the wet milling process, which involves grinding of softened maize and separation of corn oil seeds (germs), gluten (proteins), fibers (husk) and finally pure starch. 2) sorbitol (maize steep liquor): it contains amino acids, proteins and are used by antibiotics drugs manufacturers. Also it is a large source of biogas, which is being used as fuel for driers, boilers etc. Sorbitol a hexavalent sugar alcohol is a common constituent in many edible fruits. Although known since many decades, it could not find any commercial applications, as its extraction from fruits was very expensive. Its importance was recognized later only after the large scale economical manufacture of sorbitol from the commercially available glucose became possible by catalic reactions with hydrogen.
