Aluminum Alloy 7050 is available in Plate, Extruded Wire, Rod and Bar.

Aluminium alloy 7050 is an aerospace grade of aluminium combining high strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness. It is particularly suited for heavy plate applications (3" to 6" thick) due to it's lower quench sensitivity and retention of strength in thicker sections. Aluminium 7050 therefore is the premium choice aerospace aluminium for applications such as fuselage frames, bulkheads and wing skins.

Aluminium 7050 plate is available in two tempers. T7651 (AMS 4201) combines the highest strength with good exfoliation corrosion resistance and average SCC resistance. T7451 (AMS 4050) provides better SCC resistance and excellent exfoliation resistance at slightly lower strength levels.

Because the allotropic behavior of titanium allows diverse changes in microstructures by variations in thermo mechanical processing, a broad range of properties and applications can be served with a minimum number of grades. This is especially true of the alloys with a two-phase, alpha+bita crystal structure.

the most widely used titanium alloy is the ti-6al-4v alpha-beta alloy. This alloy is well understood and is also very tolerant on variations in fabrication operations, despite its relatively poor room-temperature shaping and forming characteristics compared to steel and aluminium. Alloy ti-6al-4v, which has limited section size hardenability, is most commonly used in the annealed condition.

other titanium alloys are designed for particular application areas. For example:
  • alloys ti-5al-2sn-2zr-4mo-4cr (commonly called ti-17) and ti-6al-2sn-4zr-6mo for high strength in heavy sections at elevated temperatures.

  • alloys ti-6al-6v-2sn, ti-6al-4v and ti-10v-2fe-3al for high strength at low-to-moderate temperatures.

    • welding has the greatest potential for affecting material properties. In all types of welds, contamination by interstitial impurities such as oxygen and nitrogen must be minimized to maintain useful ductility in the weldment. Alloy composition, welding procedure, and subsequent heat treatment are highly important in determining the final properties of welded joints.

      some general principles can be summarized as follows:
      • welding generally increases strength and hardness
      • welding generally decreases tensile and bend ductility
      • welds in unalloyed titanium grades 1, 2 and 3 do not require post-weld treatment unless the material will be highly stressed in a strongly reducing atmosphere
      • welds in more beta-rich alpha-beta alloys such as ti-6al-6v-2sn have a high likelihood of fracturing with little or no plastic straining.

        • titanium and titanium alloys are heat treated for the following purposes:
          • to reduce residual stresses developed during fabrication
          • to produce an optimal combination of ductility, machinability, and dimensional and structural stability (annealing)
          • to increase strength (solution treating and aging)
          • to optimise special properties such as fracture toughness, fatigue strength, and high-temperature creep strength.

Inconel 718 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy designed to resist a wide range of severely corrosive environments, pitting and crevice corrosion. This nickel steel alloy also displays exceptionally high yield, tensile, and creep-rupture properties at high temperatures. This nickel alloy is used from cryogenic temperatures up to long term service at 1200° F. One of the distinguishing features of Inconel 718's composition is the addition of niobium to permit age hardening which allows annealing and welding without spontaneous hardening during heating and cooling. The addition of niobium acts with the molybdenum to stiffen the alloy's matrix and provide high strength without a strengthening heat treatment. Other popular nickel-chromium alloys are age hardened through the addition of aluminum and titanium. This nickel steel alloy is readily fabricated and may be welded in either the annealed or precipitation (age) hardened condition. This superalloy is used in a variety of industries such as aerospace, chemical processing, marine engineering, pollution-control equipment, and nuclear reactors.

Alloy 718 exhibits excellent high yield tensile and creep-rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300ºF and oxidation resistance to 1800ºF. Typical Mechanical Properties
There are two main types of solution annealed and aging treatments:

  • Solution Treatment (AMS 5662 Bar / AMS 5596 Sheet): 1725°F - 1850°F + Air Cool.
  • Heat Treatment (AMS 5663 Bar) : 1325°F for 8 hrs, cooling 100°F/hr to 1150°F, hold at 1150°F for 8hrs min, + Air Cool.
  • This treatment gives the highest room temperature tensile and yield strengths as well as producing the highest fatigue strength. It is the optimum heat treatment for Alloy 718 where a combination of rupture life, notch rupture life and rupture ductility is required.
  • Alternative Solution Treatment (AMS 5664 Bar / AMS 5597 Sheet): 1900°F - 1950°F + Air Cool
  • Heat Treatment: 1400°F for 10hrs, furnace cool to 1200°F, hold at 1200°F for a total aging time of 20 hrs + Air Cool.
  • This is the prefered treatment in tensile-limited applications as it produces the best transverse ductility in heavy sections, impact strength and low temperature notch tensile strength. However, this treatment has a tendency to produce notch brittleness in stress rupture.
