What is Agarwood? : Agarwood is an aromatic resinous and fragrant non-wood forest product which is a highly prized incense. The extremely rare and precious produce is often referred to as wood of god and black gold from the golden tree of Aquilaria. Among the uses of agarwood are for traditional medicine, perfume, cosmetics,incense, prayer beads and ornamental products. Fast depletion of Aquilaria in the wild is why Agarwood is relatively rare and expensive. It is listed in the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Criteria (1994) and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix II (1995) and classified as threatened species for the purpose of conservation and management. Therefore the international trade of Agarwood is monitored by TRAFFIC and is subjected to control to ensure that harvest and exports are not detrimental to the survival of the Aquilaria species in the wild.
