Indonesia is one of the biggest producer of betel nut. How do people consume betel nut? it is often chewed and wrapped in betel leaves. Usually for chewing, a few slices of the nut are wrapped in a betel leaf along with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) and may include clove, cardamom, catechu andor other spices for extra flavoring. Betel leaf has a fresh, peppery taste, but it can also be bitter to varying degrees depending on the variety betel nuts are chewed with betel leaf for their effects as a mild stimulant, causing a warming sensation in the body and slightly heightened alertness, although the effects vary from person to person. The effect of chewing betel leaf and betel nut together is relatively mild, and could be compared to that of drinking a cup of coffee.

Shell is carbonized by using methods like pit method, drum method, destructive distillation etc. The shell charcoal is manufactured by burning shells of fully matured nuts in limited supply of air sufficient only for carbonization, but not for complete destruction. The output of charcoal in the traditional pith or drum methods are just below 30 per cent of the weight of the original shells.
