Inonotus obliquus, commonly calledchaga(/t/; aLatinisationof the Russian word), is afungusin the familyHymenochaetaceae. It isparasiticonbirchand other trees. The sterileconkis irregularly formed and resembles burnt charcoal. It is not thefruiting bodyof the fungus, but asclerotiumor mass ofmycelium, mostly black because of a great amount ofmelanin.[2]Some people consider chaga medicinal.[3]

A 2012Cochrane Review, updated in 2020, Robertsonet al.reviewed the evidence on the efficacy of pine bark extract for treating a wide range of complaints (including asthma, children with ADHD, blood pressure, pain in CVI, reducing fasting blood glucose, osteoarthritis of the knee, cognitive failure in those with traumatic brain injury) and in all cases failed to find evidence to support the efficacy of the extract.[2]

Etymology and association with mulberryedit
The Japanese nameis composed of, an islandofGot, Nagasaki, where this mushroom used to grow, and, which means bump, referring to the mushroom's appearance. Per Wu et al. (2012) citing Ito (1955) and Imazeki and Hongo (1989), this is a mushroom that is always said to be on mulberry trees.[2]
The Chinese name/is composed of ("mulberry tree") and / ("yellow"). The Korean nameis from Chinese.
Historical recordsedit
The earliest attestation of the name is inYaoxing Lun.[3]
Various Chinese historical records documented Xinzhou sanghuang (), in whichXinzhouis a place name in modern-dayJiangxi. It was depicted with hair-like objects, apparently describingInonotus hispidus.[4]
Folk understandingsedit
InTonghua, Jilin, various mushrooms were seen as sanghuang by the locals, where it was used to treat cancer and stomach illnesses. The report described the mushrooms and attached photos, but didn't identify them by Latin names
