Glass Table Tops

The difference between a glass table top and a glass table cover: A glass table top means that your table's top is actually constructed out of glass.

A glass table top cover, on the other hand, is made of glass and rests on top of the actual table. It preserves the look and value of your wooden or metal table.

Why Glass Table Tops?

  • Protect your furniture from nicks, scratches, and other possible damage.
  • Refresh older pieces with a less permanent option, as compared to stains or paint.
  • Glass is beautiful; a glass top is an excellent way to add shine to an otherwise dull item.
  • Elevate the impact of wood tables or dressers while protecting these investments from scratches, glass rings, sun damage and scuffs.
  • Order a tabletop to complete a table, nightstand or even a plant stand.
  • Renew old glass table inserts with a glass table replacement; outdoor tables are especially vulnerable to damage and weathering.
Glass tabletops are used in a number of different ways, but the most popular is to use the glass to protect the surface of a table, desk, or a coffee table. When used as a cover on a wood surface, normally a thinner glass such as 1/4" is used. The edges of the glass would normally be polished to smooth them out and avoid the possibility of injury from the sharp edges. When glass is used as a wood surface cover there is no need for tempering the glass.
Checklist for when glass sits directly on the surface of furniture:
  • Recommended glass thickness: 1/4" is the preferred thickness. 3/8" or 1/2"can be used for effect but make sure that the furniture can carry the weight.
  • Recommended edge: flat polish is the preferred edge work. However, pencil polish or beveled polish can be used to give accent or a dramatic effect.
  • Glass Strength: Annealed glass is sufficient to protect the table but glass can always be tempered for added safety, especially if there are younger kids in the house.
GLASS EDGES
We offer four different types of edging for your glass table top or glass table cover. The type of edging you choose will be influenced by the use to which you put the table. Here are the basic edges:
Seamed edgeremoves the sharpness for safer handling. In this application, after the glass is cut the edges are sanded to dull the sharp edges. This is to make the glass safe to handle. Choose a seamed edge if the glass is to be framed and in applications where the edges are not visible.

Flat edgea polished "square" edge. In this application the edge of the glass have been polished to a smooth shiny finish. Choose a flat polish when the edge of the glass are visible and you prefer a minimalistic look.

Pencil edgea polished round edge. In this application the edge of the glass have been polished to a smooth shiny rounded finish.

Beveled edgea straight sloped edge from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch slope. In this application the edge of the glass are cut and polished in an angle with a specific bevel width. Bevel width must be specified by the customer and can be range in size from 1/4" to 1-3/4". Most common one is 1". Bevel width must be entered in the system when pricing and ordering.

Solar Energy Glass

Flat glass is an integral component of many solar energy technologies, including solar thermal collectors, photo voltaic modules and concentrated solar power plants. The solar energy market for flat glass is one of high added-value glass products and a strong driver for innovation. However, despite Europe's technological lead, a crumbling European market and unfair trade practices in the entire value chain have severely hit Europe's production.
Glass is designed to optimise solar energy conversion while providing long term protection against external conditions. Extra clear glass, with low iron oxide content is typically used in solar applications. Either float or patterned, low iron glass may be coated with an anti-reflecting coating to further increase performance. Transparent conductive coating can also be used as an electrical contact in some photo voltaic technologies allowing the light through to the photovoltaic material while conducting the general electricity out of the modules. Glass may also be toughened to increase strength and durability.

Glass in solar thermal applications
Solar thermal collectors are intended to collect heat - as opposed to photo voltaic panels which convert sunlight into electrical power. The collected solar heat can be used to supply hot water or heat ex changers, for domestic or industrial applications.
There are various kinds of solar thermal collectors but most require a flat glass cover, or glazing, which serves not only to protect the panel while letting the sunlight through but also to prevent cooling of the panel from exposure to cold air.

Glass in photovoltaic applications
Photo voltaic technologies are used to convert solar energy directly into electricity. There are many different technologies available to suit various requirements, from domestic systems to utility scale. Photo voltaic panels come in various shapes and colors offering flexibility for design integration and building integrated applications (BIPV).
The most common photo voltaic technology is based on crystalline silicon solar cells. In this application glass acts as a protective outer layer, while transmitting the solar light to the photo voltaic cells interconnected underneath.
Other photo voltaic technologies include thin film where solar cells are deposited as a sequence of thin films on glass. In these technologies, transparent conductive coated glass can be used as the front glass upon which the films are grown. The conductive coating not only allows light through to the photo active films, but also conducts the generated electricity out of the modules.

Glass and mirrors in concentrated solar power Systems
Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems are used to produce electricity from the sun at utility scale. These systems are mainly used in regions with high levels of solar irradiance. CSP systems use lenses or mirrors to concentrate a large amount of sunlight onto a central receiver, thereby producing electricity either by concentrating the sunlight onto a high performance photo voltaic cell or by heating a transfer fluid to supply heat to a conventional thermodynamic power plant. For CSP systems, extra clear glass and mirrored glass are used to redirect accurately the maximum amounts of light towards the focal point.

Aluminium Mirror

Analuminium glass mirroris made of afloat glassmanufactured using vacuum coating and alow aluminium glassmirror is manufactured by coating silver and two layers of protective paint on the back surface of glass. A low aluminium glass mirror is very clear, light transmissive, smooth, and reflects accurate natural colors. This type of glass is widely used for framing presentations and exhibitions in which a precise color representation of the artwork is truly essential or when the background color of the frame is predominantly white.

A safety glassmirroris made by adhering a special protective film to the back surface of a silver glass mirror, which prevents injuries in case the mirror is broken. This kind of mirror is used for furniture, doors, glass walls, commercial shelves, or public areas.

Asilkscreen printed glass mirroris produced using inorganic color ink that prints patterns through a special screen onto glass. Various colors, patterns, and glass shapes are available. Such a glass mirror is durable and more moisture resistant than ordinary printed glass and can serve for over 20 years. This type of glass is widely used for decorative purposes (e.g., on mirrors, table tops, doors, windows, kitchen chop boards, etc.).

Glass Bricks

Glass brick, also known as glass block, is an architectural element made from glass. Glass bricks provide visual obscuration while admitting light. The glass block was originally developed in the early 1900s to provide natural light in manufacturing plants. Sidewalk skylight (also named 'pavement light') Glass bricks are produced for both wall and floor applications. Glass blocks for use in floors are normally manufactured as a single solid piece, or as a hollow glass block with thicker side walls than the standard wall blocks. These blocks are normally cast into concrete gridwork or set into a metal frame, allowing multiple units to be combined to span over openings in basements and roofs. Glass wall blocks should not be used in flooring applications. Hollow glass wall blocks are manufactured as two separate halves and, whilst the glass is still molten, the two pieces are pressed together and annealed. The resulting glass blocks will have a partial vacuum at the hollow centre.
