A cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. Breast cancer can occur in women and rarely in men. Symptoms of breast cancer include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast.

About 5–10% of cases are due to genes inherited from a person's parents. Breast cancer most commonly develops in cells from the lining of milk ducts and the lobules that supply the ducts with milk.

A group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood (high blood glucose). Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many complications. There are three main types of diabetes mellitus

Type 1 diabetes

• A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
• The body does not produce insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, or early-onset diabetes. People usually develop type 1 diabetes before their 40th year, often in early adulthood or teenage years. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1. These patients will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life. They must also ensure proper blood-glucose levels by carrying out regular blood tests and following a special diet.

Type 2 diabetes

• A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).
• The body does not produce enough insulin for proper function, or the cells in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are type 2. Some people may be able to control their type 2 diabetes symptoms by losing weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and monitoring their blood glucose levels. However, type 2 diabetes is typically a progressive disease - it gradually gets worse - and the patient will probably end up have to take insulin, usually in tablet form.

CANCER, also called malignancy, is an abnormal growth of cells. There are more than 200 types of cancer, including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. Symptoms vary depending on the type.

A disease in which the body's immune system attacks healthy cells. An autoimmune disease is a condition in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your body.

Addison’s disease

• Addison’s disease affects the adrenal glands, which produce the hormones cortisol and aldosterone. Having too little of these hormones can affect the way the body uses and stores carbohydrates and sugar.
• Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, weight loss, and low blood sugar.

Alopecia areata :

• Sudden hair loss that starts with one or more circular bald patches that may overlap.

Ankylosing spondylitis :

• An inflammatory arthritis affecting the spine and large joints.

Celiac disease

People with celiac disease can’t eat foods containing gluten — a protein found in wheat, rye, and other grain products. When gluten is in the intestine, the immune system attacks it and causes inflammation.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy

Similar to Guillian-Barre, the immune system also attacks the nerves in CIDP, but symptoms last much longer. About 30% of patients can become confined to a wheelchair if not diagnosed and treated early. Treatment for CIDP and GBS are essentially the same.

Graves' disease

The immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to release excess amounts of thyroid hormone into the blood (hyperthyroidism). Symptoms of Graves' disease can include bulging eyes as well as weight loss, nervousness, irritability, rapid heart rate, weakness, and brittle hair. Destruction or removal of the thyroid gland, using medicines or surgery, is usually required to treat Graves' disease.

• Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that any sexually active person can get. Most people with the virus don’t have symptoms. Even without signs of the disease, herpes can still be spread to sex partners.

• Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) passed on through vaginal, anal and oral sex. Treatment from a sexual health clinic can help. Symptoms clear up on their own but can come back.

• One of the most common haematology tests is the complete blood count, or CBC. This test is often conducted during a routine exam and can detect anaemia, clotting problems, blood cancers, immune system disorders and infections.
• The three main types of blood cancer are Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. Leukaemia is a blood cancer that originates in the blood and bone marrow. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infections.

Symptoms of blood disorders:

• Most commonly, symptoms are caused by decreases in the blood components. Decreased red blood cells and haemoglobin can cause symptoms of anaemia, such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. Decreased white blood cells or immune system proteins can cause recurrent fever and infections.
• Patients with CANCER, diagnosed or undiagnosed, are at risk for developing Blood Clots, which occur in 4% to 20% of patients. It is the second leading cause of death for these patients. It is important for patients, those with CANCER and those only affected by blood clots, to understand the connection between the two.
• Examples of blood tests used to diagnose CANCER include Complete blood count (CBC). This common blood test measures the amount of various types of blood cells in a sample of blood. Blood Cancers may be detected using this test if too many or too few of a type of blood cell or abnormal cells are found.
