Electrically Powered Governor Systems

The 512524 and 17121724 EPGs are three-component governing systems for 12 or 24 Vdc operation. All EPG systems include an actuator, an electronic speed control, and magnetic pickup.

Isochronous electronic controls are available with either start-fuel limit or with switch-selected dual dynamics.

Droop controls are available for certain types of parallel generator application. Load sharing devices are available for use with the isochronous models used in paralleled applications.

The selected EPG actuator is mounted on the prime mover and mechanically linked to the fuel control. The rotary design and output shaft on both ends gives 30 (512524) or 35 (17121724) clockwise or counterclockwise travel to low-mass, low-friction fuel linkages. Preloaded internal return springs supply the shaft torque in the decrease-fuel direction and for shutdown should the electronic control signal be lost.

A rugged cast aluminum housing permits installation of the speed control on the engine skid. In operation, the control compares the speed of the engine with the desired speed or desired load and sets the actuator position to correct discrepancies. Gain and stability adjustments tailor the governors response to the specific engine.

EPG controllers with switch-selected dynamics allow stable operation at no load and brisk response when the unit is heavily loaded.

Electrohydraulic Power Cylinder

The EHPC is a linear integrating actuator typically used for steam turbine control-valve or valve-rack positioning. This actuator uses a low-pressure (80250 psi 5521724 kPa) hydraulic oil source and then uses three amplification stages to create the required output shaft force. As a custom (made to order) actuator, the EHPC is an actuator that is configured designed and manufactured specifically for the application. The EHPC has the flexibility to be ordered with the following configuration options:

- li Single or double acting cylinder action - li Stroke & cylinder bore options - li Extend or retract current to position direction - li Top or bottom mounting attachment - li Single or dual coil input actuator torque motor - li With or without return spring - li 420 mA or 010 Vdc cylinder feedback signal - li Optional 1st & 2nd stage oil supply - li 2nd stage spring bias option - li 3rd stage spring bias option p This actuator accepts a 0200 mA (100 mA null, with an optional 15 mA null) input control signal, to position its output cylinder shaft, and outputs a 420 mA or 010 Vdc servo position indication feedback signal. An integrating actuator driver (such as a MicroNetTM actuator controller module) or an external servo position driver (such as the Woodward SPC servo position controller) is required to drive and position the EHPC. p The EHPC includes electrical position sensing on the output of the large power cylindera combination that, when used with a compatible electronic or digital control, results in powerful steam valve movement with pinpoint accuracy. The EHPC is driven by oil pressure supplied by either the turbines lubricating-oil supply or from an external independent oil supply and can be operated in any attitude.

Electric Actuation Solutions

Woodward APECS linear actuators provide proportional fuel control for construction, industrial, and agricultural equipment, forming the foundation of full electronic governing systems. These actuators are suitable for speed governing on generator sets, forklifts, pump sets, wood chippers, pleasure boats, and many types of off-road vehicles.

The actuators are easily mounted near the fuel system and direct connected to the fuel control rod or lever. In most installations, the normal rotary-to-rotary connection is eliminated, resulting in a more trouble-free and accurate control system.

BL18 Power Supply And Battery Charging Unit

The BL18 is a versatile direct voltage supply unit t hat can be applied both, as battery charger and as stabilized power pack supply unit. If applied as battery charger, the BL18 serves to ei ther charge or to maintain closed or gas-proof 24 V lead-acid batteries in full charge condition by providing the facility to simultaneously supply consumers with DC cur-rent (parallel operation). W hen the BL18 is operated in parallel with a bat- tery or with another consumer and the battery has to be disconnected, e.g. for maintenance or ex- change, the supply of this consumer will be backed- up to the battery chargers nominal capacity.

Thanks to the units short-circuit capacity, it must not be switched off in case of short-circuit type occurrence, such as e.g. start of a Diesel engine or similar situations.

As stabilized power pack supply unit, the BL18 supp lies connected consumers with a stabilized DC voltage that can be adjusted within a r ange of 24V to 27.5 V andor 12 V to 24 V

Electronic Controls Proximity Switches

Magnetic pickups (MPUs) are speed sensors that detect the speed of a prime mover, typically an engine or turbine. They are the communication link between your engine and a Woodward electronic governor control. The MPU is installed next to a drive shaft gear made of a material that reacts to a magnetic field. As each gear tooth passes the MPU, the gear interrupts the MPU's magnetic field, and an alternating voltage is developed. The frequency of this voltage is translated by the speed control into a signal that accurately depicts the speed of the prime mover.

Woodwards magnetic pickups can be used with most electronic speed controls. Models are available for hazardous location installation.

Woodward Measuring Transducers

  • Features True RMS sensing , Class 0.5 accuracy , RS-485 Modbus RTU Slave or Profibus DP communication
Woodwards UMT 1 Series consists of measuring transducers that feature true RMS sensing. Measured values are calculated and displayed on a two-line, 16-character LC Display. They can either be assigned to analog outputs (configurable as -20 to 20 mA, 0 to 20 mA, or 4 to 20 mA) or transmitted to a higher-level control system via RS-485 or Profibus DP interface.

The primary measured values of voltage and current are used to calculate the values for active, re-active, apparent power, power factor (cosphi), kWh and kvarh. An impulse output is also provided to output kWh or kVarh values.

L VALVES

The L-Series Position Controller accepts a position command and drives the 060 degree output shaft to the commanded position based on an internal shaft position sensor. The high-efficiency torque motor delivers 0.34 N*m (0.25 lb-ft) nominally over 60 travel range to operate fuel or air control devices (see specifications for torque performance over the full product temperature range).

The L-Series Position Controller accepts either a PWM, 05 V, or CAN command for output positioning. The command signals are issued by the appropriate supervisory engine management system, and the L-Series must be set up properly in software to expect the correct signal for the application.

For status purposes, a relay driver output is available on the L-Series control which changes state whenever a fault or error condition is experienced by the controller.

The L-Series provides a direct position output signal in the form of a dc voltage if required by the system. The throttle position (TPS) output represents full counterclockwise-to-clockwise rotation of the actuator shaft, and thus gives the operator an external position indication. Besides the traditional bracket mount using external linkage, the L-Series control is available in a variety of mechanical configurations, including integration with diesel fuel pumps, throttle bodies, and mixers (product spec 03222). The shaft rotation can be configured for clockwise or counterclockwise rotation for increasing fuel. For information on Woodward throttle body applications, refer to manual 26249 (ITB and LC-50).
