Kantha is the famous embroidery of the state of West Bengal, India. Kantha evolved out of necessity to drape or protect against cold. Kontha in Sanskrit means rags. It can rightly be called the recycling art. The precious silks and muslins when became worn-out, women instead of throwing them away, piled them in layers and stitched. Kantha was said to be a lady’s self-expression. The real Kantha narrates a story, the emotions and the life of the artist. Kantha is similar to the decorative running stitch of Japanese sashiko quilting. The entire cloth is covered with running stitches, employing beautiful motifs of folk art, gods and goddesses, flowers, animals, birds and geometrical shapes, as well as themes from everyday activities; that means it can be anything the worker can relate to. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slight wrinkled, wavy effect.
Contemporary Kantha as been used by us to make stoles and scarves on silk fabric
All shawls and stoles are available in numerous designs both traditional and contemporary. Products are available in numerous colour combinations which include rich bright colours as well as earthy sober tones. Few samples stoles are given in the photos below.

Pashmina wool is the softest, most luxurious and the best wool in the world. Pashmina is the soft, thick undercoat that keeps the beautiful changra mountain goat warm through the freezing, high-altitude winters of Tibet and Ladakh. Its comes from Himalayan region as finest Kashmir wool which is derived at the altitudes of 12000 to 14000 ft from a special goat (Capra Hircus), where temperature goes down up to -40 degree centigrade. The thermo conductivity of the wool is the best in the world, as it survives the animal at minus 40 degree centigrade. The animal survives because of this nature’s gifted hair. Each spring it is gently and lovingly combed out by hand by the locals, so the animals are unperturbed. Then it is hand spun into gossamer-fine yarn on a 'charkha' (spinning wheel) and woven into fabric on ancient handlooms in the Kashmir Valley. All these processes are extremely complex and contribute to the amazing softness and luxuriant qualities of the end product. Pashmina fibre is less than 15-19 micron in thickness making it very soft (in comparison human hair is 75 microns thick).
