Different allied species of lspaghula are : Plantago major, P. lanceolata, P. arenaria, P. psyllium Merchanical action of it's mucilage is used to cure inflammation of the mucous membrance of G. I. & uro - genital tracts. As a result of increase in bulk by swelling of the mucilage intestinal peristalsis is stimulated by reflex action & drug is used as a bulk laxative especially in habitual constipation.
It is a very good mild laxative so that useful to all-aged persons. It has dual effects, so that useful in constipation and diarrhoea both. Excessive long time intake may reduce sexual potency in men. Tincture of Plantago ovata is used in Homeopathy.
