The main objective of the self watering is to keep the potting medium adequately moisture so that the Plant gets the food as and when required. Another merit is that the potting medium is adequately aerated for healthy growth of the plant roots. Some other advantages include that the plants won't need watering on a daily basis, the risk of over-watering or under-watering is considerably reduced.
