Viking Shields

Viking shield is are protective device, meant to intercept attacks. The term often refers to a device that is held in the hand, as opposed to armour or a bullet proof vest. Viking shields have varied greatly in construction over time and place. Sometimes viking shields were made of metal, but wood or animal hide construction was much more common; wicker and even turtle shells have been used. Size and weight varied greatly, lightly armoured warriors relying on speed and surprise would generally carry light shields that were either small or thin. Heavy troops might be equipped with large heavy shields that could protect most of the body.
Begining in 793AD, when a band of Scandinavians sacked the monastry at Lindisfarne, the Viking Age ended with the death of Harold Hardrada in 1066. The glorious age was embedded in history as an age of great journeys and ferocious battles.
The use of Viking shields went far beyond a mere means to parry blows from an opponent. Ornamented with personal insignias and family coats of arms, the shield evolved into a symbol of warrior's allegiance and loyalty. The large circular shield of the Vikings was part of a conservative tradition of manufacture. Shields were typically 80-90 cm in diameter. The board was flat and made of a single layer of planks butted together. The handle was long, often crossing the full diameter of the shield, and was tapered towards both ends. The Gokstad shields were made of seven or eight white pine planks of varying widths. The planks were usually only 6-10mm thick and were bevelled even thinner at the outer edge. Representations of shields in Viking art are frequently marked with 'pinwheel' patterns of radiating curved lines.

Scottish shields or sometimes called the targe, were round shields with loops on the back through one of which the arm was passed while the other was grasped by the hand. The typical Scottish targe was about twenty inches in diameter and made of wood covered with leather studded with brass bosses. It had a central spike which was sometimes as much as ten inches long and could be unscrewed and carried in a pocket in the deerskin lining. The Scottish targe was effectively used by the clansmen as a defence against both arrows and hand weapons. This shield was light and maneuverable, often concealing a left-hand held dirk.
It was used by the wild clansmen of Scotland and gave the Redcoats real trouble during Bonnie Prince Charlie's Rebellion. It had a thick plywood construction that allowed for a thick dose of protection. The long and removable steel spike had a square cross section and screwed into a grommet for use as a weapon. The thick, top grain leather was often embossed with traditional Celtic designs and protected by a leather lacquer to give it a beautiful sheen. The construction of leather over wood, boasting brass accents for beauty and strength along with a fierce steel center spike made it a perfect addition to all collections.

Egyptian Shields

Egyptian shield is a protective device, meant to intercept attacks. The term often refers to a device that is held in the hand, as opposed to armour or a bullet proof vest. Egyptian shields have varied greatly in construction over time and place. Size and weight varied greatly, lightly armoured warriors relying on speed and surprise would generally carry light shields that were either small or thin. Heavy troops might be equipped with large heavy shields that could protect most of the body.
Shields are a broad piece of armor made of rigid material and strapped to the arm or carried in the hand for protection against hurled or thrusted weapons. During the late Predynastic Period to the Middle Kingdom, long and rectangular shields made of cowhide stretched over a wooden frame offered the real body protection to the Egyptian soldiers. The length of the shield varied from one to one and a half meters and tapered towards the top to a curved or pointed edge.
In the 20th century BC, when Egyptians had not yet come into conflict with Asiatics, man-high shields behind which the whole body could be hidden, gave good protection against showers of arrows. Big shields were heavier, limiting the time they could be carried, the speed with which the soldiers could advance and their field of vision. During the New Kingdom bronze was sometimes used. Metal plate shields were heavier than leather shields with wooden frames, and did not necessarily afford better protection. The shields was usually held by a handle or a leather strip fastened to the center of the frame. They were sometimes carried by a strap slung over the shoulder allowing the soldier to use both hands. Shields made of turtle shells were also used in predynastic times; later these evolved into rectangular shields made from wood covered with leather. The curve at the top of the rectangular foot soldier's shield shows the influence of predynastic shell shields.
