This is a specialized machine for testing Pouyet / Krone/ E 10B IPM / GD tube. If GD is not proper then exchange line cards can not be protected from surge voltage. Modulated signal equivalent to lightening signal is internally generated and is applied to GD tube.This will force the gas inside the GD tube to discharge and we get alarm from the unit. Individual section of GD tube like A or B limb can be tested. Similarly we have tester for testing 10 Ch GD tube magazine of Krone and Pouyet type.
Insert the IPM/GD Tube into the appropriate socket. Select A or B limb. Apply Low signal by pressing "Low" button. Then for good GD tube gas will not discharge and we will not get any buzzer. Then press "High" button . This time high modulated signal will be applied. We should get buzzer for good tube. Repeat for other types of GD tubes.
This tester is useful for testing exchange and subscriber side of the line. On the exchange side we can check Exch. Voltage & Dial tone. On the subscriber side we can check the presence of AC voltage, Battery, Earth, Short-circuit and Condenser click. We can also give a ring to the subscriber and talk to them. There is also a provision to check exchange-side ISDN voltage. Similarly for broadband we can verify whether loop resistance is less than 1 K-Ohms. There is also a provision to send a tone to catch a pair. For testing line in field, Field line tester is also available.
Exchange side is connected to terminals marked Exchange. Similarly line side is connected to terminals marked Line side. Exchange Earthing is connected to Eth terminal. Where as Telephone handset is connected to terminals marked Speech. On Exchange side press V button, then meter will indicate Exchange voltage. For dial tone button we get dial tone on handset. On line side we can check Battery A/B, Earth A/B, Short circuit / Condenser click. We can also give Ring to party. If party lifts the handset we get LED indication. Then we can talk to party. There is provision to feed tone on the line by pressing Tone button. For broadband line we can check loop resistance by looping that pair at far end.
In order to reduce Broadband and ISDN Line transmission losses, it is essential to check Earth resistance. With this tester we can check earth resistance up to 0.1 ohms. We can also measure soil resistivity. Unit works on chargeable battery. Necessary accessories along with charger are provided with unit.
Short left side two terminals E1 & P1 and connect it to point whose resistance is to be measured. This wire should be shortest possible. Connect other 2 wire provided along with unit to other two terminals. Fix the rods at app.10 to 15 meters in different directions. Pour a glass of water on the rod to make good contact. Select 2V range & press test button. Then display will give direct reading of earth resistance.
In the field it is difficult to test broadband line. Since Broadband signal is in digital format. This signal is converted into analog format by demodulation and it is indicated on the digital display. For proper operation of broadband, this signal strength must be within certain range.
Connect the exchange side of line under test to the machine. Press Exchange Voltage button. Display will indicate exchange supply voltage. Then press B/B signal button. Machine will convert ADSL digital signal into analog format by our specialized signal processor & display signal strength in mV. This signal strength should be between 1200 to 1300 mV.
