Fame (fatty acid methyl ester) analysis is a phenotype approach and the only commercially available microbial identification system that uses cellular fatty analysis by gas chromatography (gc-fame). Researchers have identified microbes using gas chromatography analysis of cellular fatty acids (gc-fame) for half a century. In fact, there is no other commercially-available identification system today that has been able to harness this reliable, time-tested technology.
