The origin of the peanut is unknown, although we do know that peanuts were found as early as 950 B.C.Brazil and Peru were possibly the countries where they were first discovered. From there, they are supposed to be immigrated as a crop to Africa by missionaries and pioneers. From Africa, they were brought to America by slave traders. In the colonial era, they were used as food for black slaves, who were brought under appalling conditions to America on boats. Peanuts had and have a high nutritional value, were cheap and kept well.
