In solvent-based air-drying systems, the same cobalt-based drier will be able to function satisfactorily in many different coating types. This is not the case in waterborne or water- reducible systems as the drier system is strongly dependent on the nature of each individual coating product. This is partly due to the large diversity of water-reducible binders and partly due to the presence of certain ingredients in some waterborne systems that may affect the driers. The different compositions of water-soluble and solvent soluble oxidatively drying coating materials make accurate adjustments to the drier system essential.

These compounds are promoters used in the curing of polyester and vinyl ester resins with peroxide (MEKP) type catalysts. Promoters are also called accelerators. They can be added to the resin by the suppliers, in which case the resin is said to be pre-promoted. Alternatively, promoters can be added by the manufacturer prior to adding catalyst to the resin. The purpose of cobalt-based promoters is to speed up the curing reaction of polyester and vinyl ester resins and allow them to cure at room temperature. The cobalt-based promoter helps the catalyst to start the chemical reaction between the resin and styrene monomer and form a cured solid.

Auxiliary driers : Modify the effect of other driers but do not demonstrate any drying action on their own.
