Sigma Kneader

Design and Operation


Mixing Vessel -The sigma mixer consists of a W-shaped horizontal trough containing two sigma shape mixing blades rotating within.


Mixer Blades -The clearance between the external periphery of the blades and the internal wall of the mixing vessel is generally in the range of 2 3 mm.The clearance may be higher depending on the properties of the materials being mixed.The two blades are positioned tangentially or may overlap each other.



In the tangential blade sigma mixer, the blades rotate in the mixing vessel meeting tangentially. The front blade generally rotates faster than the rear blade. The ratio of rotation speeds depends on the application. Tangential blade design is user for mixing of viscous materials.

Anchor Agitator

The anchor agitator/impeller is close clearance, radial flow impeller used for mixing of viscous liquids. The sweep diameter of the anchor impeller is generally 90 to 95 percent of the diameter of the vessel. Anchor-shaped impellers are used for liquid viscosities between 5000 and 50, 000 cP. They are common in crystallization reactors where cooling through a jacket is necessary along with good mixing.

RIBBON BLENDER START-UP

A ribbon agitator consists of a set of inner and outer helical ribbons. During operation, the outer ribbon flights move the material from the vessel side wall to the center. At the same time, the inner ribbon flights move the material from the center to side walls. Radial movement is due to the agitator rotation. Blending of powders is achieved within 15 to 20 minutes of start-up with a homogeneity of up to 95 percent.
