The most popular modern method of producing white light LEDs involves converting blue LED light into longer wavelengths by employing the fluorescent properties of a phosphor compound. LED phosphor is typically imbedded into a silicone, glass, or polymer based substrate to make a lens or encapsulate for the LED (or otherwise placed into the light path). This process converts a blue LED into a white LED. We measure the efficiency of the phosphor lens materials for down-conversion of the shorter-wavelength blue light to longer-wavelength, multi-colored light to determine the overall efficiency of a white LED. Due to the complicated nature of optical down-conversion using LED phosphor, today’s LED industry faces difficulties in measuring LED phosphor lens materials independent of the characteristics of the LED itself. At CSA Seattle, we are proud to be the first to offer a total fluorescence efficiency test specifically geared for the characterization of phosphor lens materials completely independent of an LED. Our phosphor fluorescence testing utilizes a sample of LED phosphor lens material without the LED and characterizes it, providing the user with a completely independent spectral profile which spans the visual frequency range.

Title 24 2016 is California’s building energy efficiency standard. All lighting installations in new or existing buildings which require a building permit must be compliant to this standard. JA8 and JA10 are appendixes to Title 24 which specifically reference high efficiency lighting including LED lighting. In some cases JA8 and JA10 are more demanding than ENERGY STAR® standards. CSA Group Seattle is a 17025 NVLAP accredited lighting laboratory approved by the California Energy Commission to test solid state lighting products to the new 2017 Joint Appendix 8 (JA8) lighting performance requirements. CSA Group Seattle’s Electrical Thermal Optical LED Characterization Service (ETO) provides complete Electrical-Thermal-Optical data over your choice of input electrical and thermal conditions. In order to design systems that utilize high power LEDs, the light output characteristics (color and flux) must be known as a function of temperature and electrical input characteristics. Users of this service then can make fundamental design decisions regarding LED selection, thermal management, luminous efficacy, and more. High power LED manufacturers are currently specifying optical output of their LEDs under short single current pulse conditions. Today’s high power LED specification sheets generally assume that the junction temperature is equal to the ambient air temperature of 25°C. Although these tests are easily repeatable, they are not particularly useful to engineers designing LEDs into illumination and display products. The decrease of luminous flux and shift in wavelength as temperature rises is highly variable and depends on the properties of LEDs. NIST’s Optical Technology Division (OTD) is conducting research to address this important issue and recommends LED characterization be performed under TEC Control. This information is necessary when designing robust LED-based products with specific desired light output and lifetime characteristics. LED integrators can now accurately and completely characterize the Electrical Thermal Optical properties of LEDs using CSA Group Seattle’s services to solve these complex product development challenges.

High Irradiance Stress Testing utilizes CSA Group Seattle’s Elevated Temperature Irradiance Chamber (ETIC) to evaluate the deterioration of plastic samples and phosphors exposed to blue light irradiance and elevated temperature. Alternate wavelengths can be ordered for custom test conditions. Samples are mounted in the ETIC and stressed to a maximum common irradiance across the chamber of approximately 150, 000 Wm2. Each runtime test can be set at increments of 100 hours with up to eight samples per chamber. When the runtime test is complete, samples are evaluated and a report is generated to the customer.
