Ultramet

Ultramet has developed a hafnium carbidesilicon carbide (HfCSiC) coating applied in layers by chemical vapor deposition that provides outstanding oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia is applied by low temperature (1292°F [700°C]) chemical vapor deposition to create a cost-effective, robust thermal barrier coating that can be applied to complex-shaped components. The coating is suitable for nickel-based superalloy turbine engine components.

Chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) is CVD with minor process changes that allow homogenous infiltration of porous structures such as foams and fiber preforms. Through control of pressure andor thermal gradients within a reactor, gaseous precursors are allowed to uniformly permeate porous structures. Deposition of the desired compound thus occurs on all internal surfaces. CVI offers the ability to fabricate engineered porous structures such as reticulated foam from any of the materials that can be deposited via CVD.

Foam-core sandwich panels offer exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratios, and Ultramet has used this architecture for advanced mirror systems. Foam-core mirrors employ an optical faceplate that is attached to the surface of a foam billet, and, if stiffness requirements demand, a second faceplate can be added to the rear surface. Mirrors have been fabricated with both flat and curved optical surfaces, and several material systems have been used. Silicon and silicon carbide systems offer the greatest stiffness-to-weight ratio.
