Vajiram & Ravi is forced to inform its prospective students that due to the lockdown caused by the Corona Virus: We are postponing the commencement of the May, June & July 2020 regular classroom sessions at Delhi and Chennai centres for General Studies, CSAT and Optional Subjects to August 2020. Details of the August-September 2020 classroom session would be announced on the Institute’s website when the Government gives permission to conduct classes in Delhi and Chennai centres. In a year three sessions are started, one in May, another in July and the last session in the third week of August in the Delhi centre and in June , July and August Chennai centre. The 3 sessions at both Delhi and Chennai centre focus on General Studies (Prelim cum Main), Optional Subjects and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Vajiram & Ravi's classroom coaching is conducted only at Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi and Nungambakkam, Chennai. This course consists of classroom lectures, study materials and test series. Due to the Covid-19 emergency in the year 2020, General Studies, Optional Subjects & C.S.A.T sessions in Delhi & Chennai Centres are to begin in August 2020. Details of the new session would be available on the website by last week of June 2020.

The preliminary test is by far the most challenging stage of the civil services examination with nearly 5 lakh candidates taking the test each year. After gs paper 2 - csat was made qualifying in 2015, the gs paper- 1 has assumed greater significance in deciding the success of a candidate in the preliminary test which seeks to eliminate non-serious candidates from entering the main examination. With mere 100 questions deciding your entry into the main examination, the room for error in this stage is miniscule. In addition to changes in the pattern of preliminary test, gs paper 1 is subjected to frequent changes in terms of the nature of the questions that appear in it. While the gs 1 paper from 2010-2014 focused on the conceptual understanding in conventional areas, in 2015 and 2016 the emphasis was on factual current events. On the other hand, the 2017, 2018 and 2019 papers tested the creative intelligence and problem solving skills of the candidates. UPSC Test Series - Civil Services Test Series by Vajiram & Ravi Overview of UPSC Prelims and Main test series General Studies Prelim Test Series Process and Time period: We conduct “Prelim Test Series”, consisting of 32 weeks, objective type tests on GS and CSAT. It begins in the month of October and ends in May , before the Prelim exam. The “Prelim Test Series” confers multiple benefits on the candidates. It induces a sense of focus, discipline and regularity in a candidates’ preparation. Marks: For GS – 200 marks (100 questions) and CSAT – 200 marks (80 questions). (It is to be noted that the marks scored by the candidates in GS only are considered to qualify for the Main Exam. Marks scored in CSAT are not considered but the minimum qualifying marks in CSAT is 33% in the CSAT paper without attaining which the student cannot clear the Prelim Examination) Relevance/Ideology behind Tests: Due to negative marking, the Civil Services Exam has become difficult to qualify. In some cases, students who have not practiced the objective questions realize in the exam hall their unpreparedness for the surprises thrown at them by the UPSC. In such a scenario, it is desirable that the candidates’ fine tune their GS and CSAT preparations by attending as many tests as possible. It guides them to develop better understanding of the concepts, basic principles and factual aspects of the Prelim subjects. Explanations:To provide an idea about the methodology to be adopted by the students to prepare their subjects, explanations are given by subject experts in the ”Classroom Prelim Test Series” for the questions in such a manner so that the candidates understand how the topic of the question needs to be prepared/analysed. For the benefit of the students joining the “Online Prelim Test Series” we also provide video lectures (explanations given in the Classroom Prelim Test Series).

Candidates who are selected for the personality test are usually 2.2 times, the candidates who appeared for the main exam. This depends on the vacancy, notified in the UPSC’s advertisement every year. The maximum marks for interview are 275. A score over 200 is considered a high score. Interview according to UPSC is described to be a test of candidate’s overall personality which includes analytical ability, lateral thinking, logical decision making etc. The objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The test is intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his/her intellectual qualities but also social traits and his/her interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical Exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity. Interview is not that of a strict cross-examination but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate. The board tests a candidate on integrity, the depth in understanding, awareness about issues happening around and how well a candidate is able to analyze and apply these issues in his/her answer. The interview is a two months long process that usually begins 2 weeks after the declaration of the main exam results. It is usually in the period between January to March. It is conducted at the UPSC located at Shahjahan Road, New Delhi. The schedule usually consists of two slots per day. The Forenoon slot begins by 9AM while the afternoon slot begins by 2 PM .
