Single-Acting Piston Seals are used in one-directional, displacement type hydraulic cylinders where pressure is applied from one side only. Single-Acting Cylinders rely on gravity or a spring to return the rod to its original position. A vehicle hoist is a common example of a Single-Acting cylinder. Many Single-Acting cylinder designs will only have hydraulic oil on one side of the piston, where the opposing side of the cylinder will be open to the atmosphere. In this, the open end of the cylinder will push in and draw out air which will generally carry contaminants which can cause premature wear and failure of the seal as well as corrosion to the cylinder. Consideration should be given to the external environment when selecting the correct Single-Acting seal for a particular application

Double-Acting Piston Seals are used in hydraulic cylinders where continual pressure is maintained on both the forward and backward stroke. They operate with hydraulic pressure on both sides of piston and, therefore, require double-acting seal arrangements to act accordingly. Double-acting cylinders are the most widely used type of cylinders. Piston seals work by creating a positive sealing force against the bore of the cylinder and preventing fluid from flowing across the piston head into the opposing cylinder chamber. In holding the pressurised fluid from escaping to the opposing chamber, pressure is built up on one side of the piston, making the rod extend or retract

Vee-packs are complementary male/female vee-joined seals that are used to seal rods and pistons in hydraulic and pneumatic applications. Vee-Packings or V packings are a set of multiple lips (chevron) packing sets specially designed to seal static, reciprocating applications. The male and female adaptors are used to complete a set of vees and to assist in sealing when compressed.The selection of fabric or homogeneous compounds should be made on the basis of operating pressure (as is true with the number of rings per set), temperature and the media being sealed
