Motorised Gyroscope Apparatus

The apparatus consists of a heavy rotor mounted in bearings. The rotor is driven by a variable speed motor. The motor weight is balanced by weight plate form on another side of motor. By putting weights on to the weight plate form, torque can be supplied to rotor. Mounting of rotor is such that it can move about three axes. by measuring the applied torque angular velocity of precession, it can be shown that applied torque equals to Gyroscopic couple, i.e. I. P.

Composite Walls Apparatus

The Swarg Systems & Instruments apparatus consists of a mica heater sandwiched between two identical composite slabs on either sides. Heat produced by heater flows axially on both the sides. Thermocouples are introduced at the interfaces of slabs to determine the temperature gradient. Water-cooled heat sinks are provided at the end of slabs. so that steady state heat transfer condition is achieved earlier. Thus students can determine the thermal resistance of slab at various heat inputs and different configurations.

Critical Heat Flux Apparatus

The nichrome wire is heated by passing current through it. Input to nichrome wire is controlled by a dimmer stat. As one goes on increasing wire input current increases and at critical heat flux the wire brakes, which is measured on the meter. Emissivity Measurement Apparatus

A black plate is used as a comparator for test plate. When all the physical properties, dimensions and the temperatures are equal, heat losses from both plates will also be the same, except radiation losses. Hence the input difference will be due to difference in emissivity. Both the plates are kept in a panel enclosure with perspex front and are given inputs through separate dimmer stats so that temperatures of both can be kept equal. Three Hinged Arch Apparatus

The two-hinged arches are formed out of mild-steel flat of rectangular section. The arch is supported at one end and at the other end ball-bearings are provided which run on a smooth block. Load hangers are provided for loading.

Three-hinged arch machined from Aluminium casting is provided in pieces and resembles bridge deck. Combining two pieces by means of a central pin can form the symmetrical or unsymmetrical arch. One end of the arch is supported by a bracket fitted to the universal frame, the other end is provided with a roller support, which runs on a smooth block. The horizontal thrust is measured by means of a dial gauge, which ensures that the arch end can be brought to its original position. The load required to bring the end to its initial position is measured by spring balance and gives the horizontal thrust.

Bending Moment & Shear Force Apparatus

The long and short sections of the teak wood beam are connected by hinge. A spring balance with adjusting screw mounted at a fixed distance enables one to calculate the bending moment for any load position. Pin Fin Apparatus

The Swarg Systems & Instruments apparatus consists of a pin type fin heated by a band heater at one end. A centrifugal blower draws air over the fin. Thermocouples are attached along the length of fin to note down the longitudinal temperature gradient. Heat input to the fin is measured from electrical input to the fin. Air flow is measured by an orifice and water manometer. Thus the students can conduct the experiments in natural and forced convection and at various airflow rates, various heat inputs and with fins of different materials.

Cam Analysis Apparatus

The apparatus is designed to study the cam profiles and performance of cam and follower system. The apparatus consists of a cam mounted shaft supported by ball bearings upon which three different type of cam be mounted. The push rod for follower is supported vertically which can adapt three different types of followers cams and followers can be changed easily. A variable speed motor rotates the cam. A dial gauge provided permits plotting of follower displacement with respect to cam position. By operating the system at different speed, jump speed can be found and also the effect of weight and spring-force on jump speed can be studied. Journal Bearing Apparatus

The unit consists of a motor driven journal shaft mounted in bearings over which a bearing floats. Oil is supplied to bearing by gravity feed, from oil supply tank. The motor is provided with speed control. In order to avoid clumsiness & height limitation problems with ordinary oil tube manometers, a pressure gauge is provided, which is connected to a tapping over the bearing. The tapping can be rotated to required angular position around the journal axis, so that pressure distribution around the bearing can be noted. A torque arm and weights provided enable to measure the friction torque. Weight set is provided to load the bearing. Thus experiments can be conducted at various loads & speeds. Due to rotating pressure gauge, high pressures can be measured, avoiding overflow and air bubble problems of conventional oil manometer type units. Also, an accurate determination of graph of coefficient of friction Vs. Sommer Feld number is possible, which is useful to decide whether the bearing is operating in boundary lubrication or oil film lubrication.
