The engine is coupled with rope brake or electrical dynamometer as per requirements. For rope brake dynamometer rope wound on a pulley with spring balance is used. A water rheostat is used for loading electrical dynamometer. The test rig can determine air fuel ratio B.H.P., I.H.P. specific fuel consumption and efficiency at various loading and heat loss in exhaust gases.

The Swarg Systems & Instruments test rig consists of axial flow impeller, driven by electric motor. The impeller is housed in the casing, which sucks water directly from sump. A pressure gauge on discharge side measures the delivery head. A venturi alongwith mercury manometer measures the discharge. Input to motor is measured on energymeter thus the discharge, head & input can be measured & characteristics of pump can be determined at various heads. The unit is available in constant speed & variable speed type.

Air intake is measured by an orifice meter and manometer. Discharge pressure is measured by a pressure gauge. Power input of the compressor is measured by an energymeter. Thus the students can determine volumetric efficiency, power consumption and free air discharge of compressor.

The pump is provided with a vacuum gauge at suction & a pressure gauge on discharge pipe. The pump is a monoblock provided with gate valve at discharge, which facilitates estimation of pump performance at various discharge heads. Power input to motor is measured with energy meter. Water is supplied to the turbine by a centrifugal pump. Water flow is measured by a venturimeter and a mercury manometer. Water jet is directed over the buckets by a nozzle & a spear operating inside the nozzle controls the water flow. Thus the students can visualise the operation & estimate B.H.P. & W.H.P and various efficiencies of pelton turbine.

The apparatus consists of a shaft driven by motor to which the bearing to be tested is fixed. The load is applied to bearing through the lever arrangement. The special parallelogram loading attachment transmits the load to the bearing under test & at the same time, permits the measurement of friction torque. The torque is measurements by dead weights & torque arm. The number of revolutions are counted by a revolution counter. After completion of test, the radial clearance can be measured. Thus the bearing can be tested for load test, endurance test as well as friction test.

Thus pump performance can be estimated at various heads.

The Swarg Systems & Instruments unit is a self contained recirculating type unit. All the measurements are provided to evaluate the performance of the gear pump. Gear pumps are positive displacement rotary pumps, and are used at many places, especially where high pressures are required, like hydraulic power packs.
