Chick peas are rich in both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract that snares bile (which contains cholesterol) and ferries it out of the body. Research studies have shown that insoluble fiber not only helps to increase stool bulk and prevent constipation, but also helps prevent digestive disorders. Chickpeas are a good source of protein. Combined with a whole grain such as whole-wheat protein, they provide amount of protein comparable to that of meat or dairy foods without the high calories or saturated fats.
Lentils are a small, round, lens shaped legume that come in many colors and sizes. Colors range from yellow and red to green, brown, and even black. Lentils are inexpensive, highly nutritious, and can be stored for a long time without refrigeration. These features have made lentils a staple food in many cultures across the globe. Lentils contain the third highest amount of protein of any legume, listed only below soybeans and hemp. The high protein content and low cost has made them an indispensable food item in many third world countries and among vegetarian populations. Although lentils are not considered a complete protein, when coupled with grains, such as rice or wheat, all essential amino acids are provided.
