Measuring Instruments & Equipment #3738223

Portable Brix Meter

The Brix meter is a device widely used in factories to measure the amount of sucrose in distilled water. This is a critical value in the beverages sector, since the quantity of sucrose directly impacts the sweetness of the product.

A Brix meter is an automatic instrument which calculates the Brix percentage in the sample by determining the critical angle of total reflection. This working is based on Snells law.

The instrument setup consists of a light source, usually an LED bulb, that is focused onto a prism surface by means of a lens system. The prism surface is where the liquid sample is dropped onto. When light passes through the liquid sample, a part of the light is reflected onto a linear arrangement of photodiodes, thereby creating a shadow line. The refractive index and the Brix percentage are directly related to the position of the shadow line on the photodiodes. The internal software correlates the position of the shadow line to Brix percentage and displays the value on a LCD display.

KEMs portable Brix meter: BX-1

Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing (KEM) Co., Ltd.manufacture a variety of portable instruments such as refractometers, density meters, and Brix meters. The Brix meter, BX1, is an automatic, digital system with an LCD display. This instrument is equipped with temperature compensation and it can be used to test samples at any temperature between 10 C and 75 C.

It has just one button and does not require any training or getting used to for you to operate it.

All it needs is two AAA batteries for you to take over 30, 000 readings. The auto-inactivity detection feature definitely helps by automatically switching off the instrument when it has not been put to use for a long time. The instrument has an IP65 casing that makes it splash-proof. This casing also enables washing of the prism once measurement of one sample is over.

Calibrating a portable Brix meter

Calibrating any instrument is a must, especially if it is used for quality control. Calibrating your instrument helps you notice any error that would have crept into your instrument as a result of wear and tear over the years.

Calibration is the process of comparing a known measurement, called the standard, with the measurement obtained using your instrument at hand. In the case of calibrating a portable Brix meter, the standard in most cases is distilled water. On dropping a few drops of distilled water onto the prism, the LCD display in the instrument must show a reading of 0 Brix.

BX-1 feature highlights

Measuring range of 0 85 % Brix and resolution of 0.1 % Brix.

Brix of samples ranging between 10 C and 75 C can be measured.

Auto-inactivity detection, which increases the life time of batteries.

IP65 casing to protect the instrument from splashes and dust.

Digital Polarimeter

Polarimeter is an instrument to find out Optical Rotation. From Optical Rotation one can derive the value of Specific Rotation of a liquid sample. The biggest application for this system is in the field of Pharma. Also other Industries like Sugar, Food, Flavours & Fragrances, Chemicals, Intermediates use Polarimeters in their Labs.

In a Polarimeter the concept is as follows:

There would be a light-source. The light which travels in all directions is polarised with a Polariser. When the polarised light travels through the sample, due to the nature of the sample, the light turns to the left or the right. Then with an analyser Polariser we find out (angel) whether the light has turned to the right or the left & (beer) how many degrees.

The result thus expressed in Degress is Optical Rotation. From this other results like Specific Optical Rotation, Deg Z, Deg ISS are calculated.

Rudolph manufactures various models of Digital Polarimeters depending on the no of wavelengths, accuracy, resolution, capability to maintain the temperature of the sample through Peltier, ability to withstand acidic samples, adherence to 21 CFR Part 11 etc.

While the Autopol I is the entry-level model the Autopol VI is for cutting edge of Research.

Rudolph is the only company offering NVLAP certified NIST traceable QCPs. These are available in different kinds for Positive rotation, Negative rotation, Low rotation and so on.

Autopol is the single largest selling Polarimeter in the brand and all the models have the following features:

  • Microprocessor controlled with touch-sensitive keypad and colour display
  • It displays Optical Rotation, Specific Rotation, Deg Z & Deg ISS
  • The "TempTrol" models are capable of maintaining temperature through electronic heating and cooling Peltier technology.
  • It can take sample cells of upto 200mm path length

Calibrating a portable density meter

Calibrating any instrument is a must, especially when used for quality control. Calibrating your instrument helps you take note of any error that would have crept into your instrument as a result of wear and tear over the years.

Calibration is the process of comparing a known measurement, called the standard, with the measurement obtained using your instrument at hand. In the case of calibrating a portable density meter, the standard in most cases is distilled water. On dropping a few drops of distilled water onto the prism, the LCD display in the instrument must show a reading of 0.997 g/cm3, which is the density of distilled water.

Grain Moisture Meter

wile grain moisture meter: these moisture meters are used to determine the moisture and the temperature of grains, fodder or straw through conductivity principle. The model wile 26 is a simple, direct reading system with a digital screen. It can be calibrated with a known sample. The models wile 55 & 65 are for grains and they also come with a carrying case to make it more portable. These models are being used to determine the time of harvest, delivery or to decide when to dry or ventilate. Moisture meters are generally calibrated with a known sample. The results of those known samples have to be analysed with approved method like oven moisture so that there is some kind of traceability for the whole analysis.
