Fennel is a species of flowering plant in the carrot family. It is a hardy perennial herb with feathery leaves and yellow flowers. It is native to the Mediterranean coasts but has become widely naturalised in many parts of the world, particularly on dry soils near the seashore and riverbanks.
An aniseed plant is an annual that grows to a height of 30 to 50 cm. The entire plant is covered in thin hairs. Aniseed is a ground-grey to greyish brown seed that is 3 to 5mm long, oval in shape, and has a short stem. Each pericarp has five longitudinal ridges visible. Vittae (oil ducts) are almost always present beneath the ridges, imbedded in the fruit wall. It has a lovely aromatic taste and a distinctive appealing odour.
It is mostly utilized as a flavoring, as well as in the culinary, domestic, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields. The anise fruit, sometimes known as aniseed, is commonly used to flavor curries, bread, soups, baked goods, dried figs, desserts, cream cheese, pickles, egg dishes, as well as non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.
