The strawberry planthas a short thickened stem (called a crown) which has a growing point at the upper end and which forms roots at its base (Fig. 1). New leaves and flower clusters emerge from fleshy buds in the crown in the early spring.The garden strawberry (or simply strawberry; Fragaria ananassa) is a widely grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria, collectively known asthe strawberries. It is cultivated worldwide for its fruit.
The balance of sweetness and acidity is very important to the taste of a strawberry. As trawberries ripen, their sugar content rises from about 5% in unripe green fruit to 6- 9% on ripening. At the same time, the acidity decreases, meaning ripe straw berries taste much sweeter.
