Ayurveda and other Indian system of medicine use metals ( Bhasmas) . Bhasmas are basically the incinerated/ calcined products of the different metals and their use in curing different ailments dates back to 2nd century in Samhita period. Bhasma means an ash obtained through incineration; the starter material undergoes an elaborate process of purification and this process is followed by the reaction phase, which involves incorporation of some other minerals and/or herbal extract. In fact it is the basic ingredient of different herbo-mineral preparations that are used by the Ayurvedic physicians in day to day practice. The process of the manufacturing Bhasmas viz marana is preceded by the process of sodhana i.e. purification which removes corporeal or incorporeal adulterations, detoxifies the metals, increases the fragility and potentiates the therapeutic quality. The marana i.e. Ayurvedic calcinations/ incineration converts hardness, roughness and heaviness of the metals in lightness, softness and sliminess. The process is known to disintegrate macro particles in to micro particles and make the substance inert, organic, potentiated, colloidal and ready to be digested, absorbed and assimilated in body.

Various steps involved in the preparation of bhasma(or bhasmikaran) are:- 1) Shodhan -Purification, 2) Maran - Powdering, 3) Chalan- Stirring, 4) Dhavan - Washing, 5) Galan- Filtering, 6) Putan- Heating, 7) Mardan- Triturating, 8) Bhavan- Coating with herbal extract, 9) Amrutikaran - Detoxification and 10) Sandharan- Preservation .

Guggul is the common name for the flowering mukul myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul). It is a small, thorny tree that is most commonly found in India, Guggul is a Sanskrit word which literally means one that protects from the diseases. It is in fact an oleoresin which is secreted from plant Comniphora mukul under the influence of the sunrays in summers and then solidifies in winters which is then harvested for various purposes. It itself exhibits anti- inflammatory , analgesic, anti- microbial, anti dyslipedemic, anti- atherosclerotic, hematopoietic properties. When administered internally it is known to be exhibit carminative, appetizing, diaphoretic, aphrodisiac and emmenogogue properties. Being oleoresin it has property to bind a number of Ayurvedic herbs and Bhasmas together without altering their therapeutic efficacy and safety & that made it obvious choice of Ayuvedic physicians to use it as binding agent to make pills.
