Ramor armour steels are manufactured with a novel direct quenching process. With this method not only a good blast and ballistic protection is achieved, but also good flatness, surface quality and dimensional accuracy are obtained. Ramor 400 steel is designed to give protection against high pressures caused by explosions and blasts. Ramor 500 is the most suitable choice, when protection is needed against kinetic energy projectiles i.e. ballistic performance. The number of the designation indicates the average Brinell hardness value 400 and 500 HBW, respectively.

Mechanical properties :The plate must take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and no outsiders must be allowed in the area. The safest location is usually by the bending ma- chine. The handling instructions of the steel supplier and safety instructions of the workshop must be adhered to in detail. New employees must receive appropriate train- ing before they are allowed to process hardened steels.

 

Materials testing :Recommended minimum plate thickness of Ramor 500

Heat treatment :Heat treatment is not recommended. If tempering process is needed, please, contact technical customer service for further assistance.

Welding :Ramor steels can be welded with common welding methods. Austenitic steel welding consumables are rec- ommended. Ferritic welding consumables can be used also, if the strength of the joint is important. If ferritic consumables are used, the need for elevated working temperature has to be studied in order to achieve fault- less weld joint.

Bending :When cold forming Ramor 500 steels by bending, the minimum bending radius of the upper tool has to be 8 times the thickness of the material. The correspond- ing bending radius for Ramor 400 has to be 5 times the thickness of the material. Special care has to be taken to the working safety, when these steels are cold formed. Mechanical cutting is not suitable as an edge preparation process for bended parts.

Cutting :Ramor steels are well suitable for laser and plasma cut- ting. Mechanical cutting can also be used, if the cutting shears/blades are hard enough and the equipment used is rigid. However, water jet cutting is preferred, because with this method the ballistic properties of the cut edge can be obtained.

Machining :Ramor steels can be machined using rigid hard metal tools and rigid equipment. Sufficient lubrication has to be provided and special attention has to be paid to clamping of work piece. The cutting parameters should be chosen in the way that the vibration of the cutting tool and the work piece can be avoided, because vibration decreases the lifetime of the cutting tool considerably.

Occupational safety :Special care must be taken in all stages of handling of hardened steels. Flanging is challenging due to the high strength and high flexural stresses of the plate. If the bending radius, for example, is too small and a crack is created in the bending point, the plate may fly from the bending tool in the direction of the bend.

Tempering : Heat carefully to a suitable temperature selected by reference to a tempering chart or table. Soak at the temperature for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section, then allow to cool in air. Tempering between 250-375oC is not advised as tempering within this range will reduce the impact value. Heat Treatment : Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component. Number of Tests Unless otherwise agreed upon in the order, the Brinell hardness shall be determined from each heat. The hardness shall be measured roughly 1mm below the surface. General Processing Information Prior to any processing, it is advisable to make use of the information available from the steel producer in order to draw on that experience for the processing. The following information can deal with only a few essential points. The recommendations given in STAHL-EISEN-Werkstoffblatt 088 (Weldable fine-grained structural steels, guidelines for processing, in particular for welding) correspondingly apply to this steel as well. Recommendations for welding are also given in EN 1011 part 1 and part 2 – Welding, Recommendation for welding of metallic materials-. It is left to the discretion of the processor/fabricator to decide which of the familiar precautions must be adopted to avoid cracking during thermal cutting and welding under the prevailing construction and fabrication conditions. Cold Forming The products made of this steel are suitable for cold bending provided, that consideration is given to the high hardness. The formability of steel decreases with increasing hardness. This has to be kept in mind when forming. The forming must take place at a slow and steady rate, the cut edges must be deburred and the plates heated, if necessary, prior to forming. A final stress-relieving is not necessary for this steel. Machinability In spite of its high wear resistance, the steel exhibits good machinability if sufficiently heavy machine-tools and sharp carbide-tipped tools are used. The feed rate and cutting speed have to be adjusted to the high hardness of the material. Heat Treatment Plates made of XAR®400 grade receive the required properties as a result of austenitizing and follow-on quenching in special facilities and, where applicable, tempering below Ac1. Direct quenching after hot-rolling is considered equivalent to conventional quenching. The heat treatment depends on the chemical composition and the product thickness. To avoid hardness losses, the steel must not be heated above 250°C. Thermal Cutting Preferably the flame-cutting process is used. For small product thicknesses, however, the plasma cutting process is used in the interest of minimum distortion. Preheating is not normally necessary when flame-cutting thicknesses up to around 30mm. However, if the workpiece temperature is below +5oC, or the cut edges are to be cold-formed in the course of further processing, preheating to about 150oC should be considered in the interest of cold cracking resistance. Welding If due consideration is given to the general rules for welding, this steel is weldable both manually and automatically. To prevent cold cracking in the welded joints only welding consumables giving welds of very low hydrogen content should be used. Preheating is not generally necessary for welding with austenitic filler metals. Preheating may be necessary for welding with ferritic filler metals. The preheat temperature level for welding depends on the plate thickness and the residual stress state of the structure. The working temperature should not go beyond 250oC. The wear resistance of components fabricated of XAR®400 may be increased with the aid of wear resistant layers deposited by means if welding or metal spraying. General Information Unless otherwise agreed in the order, the delivery will be governed by the conditions outlined in EN 10021. The admissible tolerances are based on EN 10051 for plates cut from hot strip and EN 10029 for four-high mill plates, unless other terms have been agreed upon. The plates will be supplied with a maximum flatness tolerance according to EN 10029, table 4, steel type H. Smaller flatness tolerances can be agreed upon at the time of ordering. Ramor 400 steel is designed to give protection against high pressures caused by explosions and blasts. Ramor 500 is the most suitable choice, when protection is needed against kinetic energy projectiles i.e. ballistic performance. The number of the designation indicates the average Brinell hardness value 400 and 500 HBW, respectively.

Mechanical properties :The plate must take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and no outsiders must be allowed in the area. The safest location is usually by the bending ma- chine. The handling instructions of the steel supplier and safety instructions of the workshop must be adhered to in detail. New employees must receive appropriate train- ing before they are allowed to process hardened steels.

 

Materials testing :Recommended minimum plate thickness of Ramor 500

Heat treatment :Heat treatment is not recommended. If tempering process is needed, please, contact technical customer service for further assistance.

Welding :Ramor steels can be welded with common welding methods. Austenitic steel welding consumables are rec- ommended. Ferritic welding consumables can be used also, if the strength of the joint is important. If ferritic consumables are used, the need for elevated working temperature has to be studied in order to achieve fault- less weld joint.

Bending :When cold forming Ramor 500 steels by bending, the minimum bending radius of the upper tool has to be 8 times the thickness of the material. The correspond- ing bending radius for Ramor 400 has to be 5 times the thickness of the material. Special care has to be taken to the working safety, when these steels are cold formed. Mechanical cutting is not suitable as an edge preparation process for bended parts.

Cutting :Ramor steels are well suitable for laser and plasma cut- ting. Mechanical cutting can also be used, if the cutting shears/blades are hard enough and the equipment used is rigid. However, water jet cutting is preferred, because with this method the ballistic properties of the cut edge can be obtained.

Machining :Ramor steels can be machined using rigid hard metal tools and rigid equipment. Sufficient lubrication has to be provided and special attention has to be paid to clamping of work piece. The cutting parameters should be chosen in the way that the vibration of the cutting tool and the work piece can be avoided, because vibration decreases the lifetime of the cutting tool considerably.

Occupational safety :Special care must be taken in all stages of handling of hardened steels. Flanging is challenging due to the high strength and high flexural stresses of the plate. If the bending radius, for example, is too small and a crack is created in the bending point, the plate may fly from the bending tool in the direction of the bend.

If further heat treatment is required annealed EN19 should be heated slowly to 860-890oC and after adequate soaking at this temperature quench in oil. Temper as soon as tools reach room temperature. Tempering : Heat carefully to a suitable temperature selected by reference to a tempering chart or table. Soak at the temperature for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section, then allow to cool in air. Tempering between 250-375oC is not advised as tempering within this range will reduce the impact value. Heat Treatment : Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Number of Tests Unless otherwise agreed upon in the order, the Brinell hardness shall be determined from each heat. The hardness shall be measured roughly 1mm below the surface. General Processing Information Prior to any processing, it is advisable to make use of the information available from the steel producer in order to draw on that experience for the processing. The following information can deal with only a few essential points. The recommendations given in STAHL-EISEN-Werkstoffblatt 088 (Weldable fine-grained structural steels, guidelines for processing, in particular for welding) correspondingly apply to this steel as well. Recommendations for welding are also given in EN 1011 part 1 and part 2 – Welding, Recommendation for welding of metallic materials-. It is left to the discretion of the processor/fabricator to decide which of the familiar precautions must be adopted to avoid cracking during thermal cutting and welding under the prevailing construction and fabrication conditions. Cold Forming The products made of this steel are suitable for cold bending provided, that consideration is given to the high hardness. The formability of steel decreases with increasing hardness. This has to be kept in mind when forming. The forming must take place at a slow and steady rate, the cut edges must be deburred and the plates heated, if necessary, prior to forming. A final stress-relieving is not necessary for this steel. Machinability In spite of its high wear resistance, the steel exhibits good machinability if sufficiently heavy machine-tools and sharp carbide-tipped tools are used. The feed rate and cutting speed have to be adjusted to the high hardness of the material. Heat Treatment Plates made of XAR®400 grade receive the required properties as a result of austenitizing and follow-on quenching in special facilities and, where applicable, tempering below Ac1. Direct quenching after hot-rolling is considered equivalent to conventional quenching. The heat treatment depends on the chemical composition and the product thickness. To avoid hardness losses, the steel must not be heated above 250°C. Thermal Cutting Preferably the flame-cutting process is used. For small product thicknesses, however, the plasma cutting process is used in the interest of minimum distortion. Preheating is not normally necessary when flame-cutting thicknesses up to around 30mm. However, if the workpiece temperature is below +5oC, or the cut edges are to be cold-formed in the course of further processing, preheating to about 150oC should be considered in the interest of cold cracking resistance. Welding If due consideration is given to the general rules for welding, this steel is weldable both manually and automatically. To prevent cold cracking in the welded joints only welding consumables giving welds of very low hydrogen content should be used. Preheating is not generally necessary for welding with austenitic filler metals. Preheating may be necessary for welding with ferritic filler metals. The preheat temperature level for welding depends on the plate thickness and the residual stress state of the structure. The working temperature should not go beyond 250oC. The wear resistance of components fabricated of XAR®400 may be increased with the aid of wear resistant layers deposited by means if welding or metal spraying. General Information Unless otherwise agreed in the order, the delivery will be governed by the conditions outlined in EN 10021. The admissible tolerances are based on EN 10051 for plates cut from hot strip and EN 10029 for four-high mill plates, unless other terms have been agreed upon. The plates will be supplied with a maximum flatness tolerance according to EN 10029, table 4, steel type H. Smaller flatness tolerances can be agreed upon at the time of ordering.
