Cumin has been in use since ancient times. Seeds excavated at the Syrian site Tell ed-Der have been dated to the second millennium BC. They have also been reported from several New Kingdom levels of ancient Egyptian archaeological sites.

UsesCumin is used world wide in food, beverages, liquors, medicine, toiletries and perfumery. It is also used to correct broken, dilated, split capillaries. Cumin is is stimulent, carminative and astringent and useful in diarrhoea and dyspepsia.

Home Remedies

  • Cumin seeds are used as a spice in cooking.
  • It helps to cure flatulence and colic pain. After heavy meals and to children after feed it can be given to prevent intestinal colic.
  • In 1 litre water add 1-teaspoon cumin seeds and boil it. This water has to be consumed the same day it should not be used the next day.
  • Cumin is of benefit to the heart and uterus and is given to women after childbirth to increase breast milk.
  • Cumin seeds contain good amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, calcium, iron and phosphorous.
  • Externally it can be used in liniments for stimulating circulation and bringing warmth to the area.

It is mainly used in North Indian cuisine and posses digestive qualities.Fennel seeds are also often used to spice up teas and drinks.

Coriander Powder

Coriander is a soft, hairless plant growing to 50cm (20in) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems.

Home Remedies

  • Inflammation and swelling on body Take equal quantity of vinegar, coriander powder, make a paste and apply it on any affected body part. This will help in easing out inflammation and will reduce swelling as well.
  • Nose bleeding (Nakseer ) Applying green coriander leaves paste on the head helps in stopping nose bleeding.
  • Raw garlic helps to reduce the nasal congestion and as well as to help to relieve other symptoms of cold. Many of the volatile compounds are lost through cooking.
  • Malaria If a person feel cold and suffer from fever regularly then take coriander powder and saunth (dry ginger powder) in equal quantity. Take 5 gram of this mixture with water four times a day. Malaria recovery will be much faster by drinking this mixture.
  • Stomach ache -Take coriander powder, add sugar crystal in it and have this mixture with a glass of water. Inflammation in stomach or stomach pain can be eased off easily by this remedy.
