Bonded dry film lubricants can be thought of ashigh performance, paint-like coatings consistingof fine particles of dry lubricants blended with abinder and special additives. After applicationand curing, these lubricants bond to the substrateand form a solid film. The film reducesfriction and increases wear life. Dry film lubricants contain special materials thatreduce friction and wear by preventing surfaceto-surface contact between mating parts. Theirperformances vary depending on the specific lubricantused. Some offer excellent lubricationand corrosion protection, while others operate athigh temperatures or under high loads. Some are formulated for use in extreme environmentsand can withstand chemicals & radiation.Dry films generally provide a thin film (10 - 100microns) of resin binder with suitableadditives. Dry Film coatings are widely used for one ora combination of the following reasons :

• Components are operated in corrosive atmospheres
• Components may be stored for long periods oftime
• Permanent lubrication is desired (such as inaccessibleparts)
• Operating pressures exceed the load bearingcapabilities of oils and greases
• Parts are subject to frequent disassembly
• Where clean operation is desired (DryFilms will not collect dust, dirt and debrislike greases and oils)
• Where a protective coating or sacrificialbreak-in lubricant is needed (pistonskirts)
• Where fretting and galling is a problem(such as splines, UV Joints etc.)
