Kerala’s history is closely linked with its commerce which in turn was wholly dependent until recent times in its spices trade, known for its spices and travelers from around the world journeyed here to trade and to gain control over this rich land. The first travelers were the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the Chinese – latter traders included the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the British. Almost all of them have left their imprint on this land in some form or the other – architecture, cuisine, literature.
It is believed that the spices trade dates three thousand years back. Perhaps it was responsible for Vasco da Gama’s quest for the Indian subcontinent and his discovery via sea route.
Pepper still remains the King of Kerala’s spices, also the state has a rich produce in Cardamom, Cinnamon, Mace, Ginger, Turmeric, Cashew Nuts, Coconuts, Sandalwood etc. Kerala continues to be the Spice Capital of the world.
Our history of Kerala dates back on the rock in scripture left by King Asoka emperor of India during the third century B.C. It was then know as the Kerala putra ruled by the powerful Chera dynasty until the 5h century A.D. This land is open to the world on all sides by Sea. Kerala is a land of different religion and has a unique record in India for harmonious co-existence of diverse religions.
