Apistonis a component of reciprocating engines, reciprocating pumps, gas compressores and pneumatic cylinders, among other similar mechanisms. It is the moving component that is contained by a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston ring. In an engine, its purpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod and connecting rod.
On some but not all engines, the piston liner can be replaced if it becomes worn. The piston liner forms the space which allows the piston to slide up and down.Piston linersare subjected to constant movement during driving and operate in temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees Celsius. Therefore they can degrade and wear out over long periods of use. Replacementpiston linersmust be an exact fit for the specific vehicle engine.
