Thrust ball bearings cannot withstand any radial loads; instead, they are made to withstand axial (thrust) stresses at high velocities. The balls in these bearings move within the raceway grooves on the bearing washers. Thrust ball bearings can be either single-direction or double-direction, and their shapes determine which types are called "flat seat" or "aligning seat." Seat washers that are spherical and aligned aid in providing mounting error tolerance.

A thrust rolling element bearing that allows for both angular misalignment and low friction rotation is a spherical roller thrust bearing. The bearing can support strong axial loads in one direction as well as radial loads. Usually, these bearings hold up a revolving shaft that may not be perfectly aligned with the housing washer within the shaft washer’s bore. The house washer’s spherical internal form may be the cause of the misalignment.
