Rain chains are a decorative alternative to traditional downspouts that guide rainwater from a roof to the ground. They are typically made of metal cups or links that are chained together. Rain chains are often used in Japan, but have also been used in the West, especially in Nordic vernacular architecture and the Modernist era.
Rain chainsrely on gutters to collect water runoff from the roof and redirect it. They're designed to hang below the rain gutter and catch water from them as they drain out. While you could skip gutters with an arched roof, this usually doesn't work well, especially in heavy rainfall.
