It is a modern replacement for traditional mud stoves (chulhas) that can change the way cooking is done in rural areas by delivering upto 70% fuel savings and 80% smoke reduction while working on all solid biomass fuels. With tejas, flame in the stove can even be set to low or high as per the need of the user with the help of air regulation technology deployed in it. It requires less than half of the wood compared to that required in traditional chulha and beneficially, in addition to wood, it can also work with any other freely available biomass such as cow dung. Very negligible amount of electricity is required to run a small dc fan in the cook stove which can even run on rechargeable battery when electricity supply is not available. Battery provides backup of 6-7 hours. residential solid fuel burning on conventional chulhas accounts for 25% of global black carbon emissions and is the primary cause of disease and death in south asia including india. Even with the provision of clean cooking solutions like lpg, people in rural and few urban areas are reluctant to switch to such fuels either because they cannot afford them on regular basis or they do not prefer them due to their behavioral preferences. About 1 million deaths occur annually in india due to household air pollution caused because of cooking on convetional chulhas. Reduction of fuel consumption in tejas reduces the fuel collection time for women who have to travel many kilometres (say 8-10 kilometres) just to collect fuel like wood, crop residue etc. For cooking.
