Solar street lightsare raised light sources which are powered by photovoltaic panels generally mounted on thelightingstructure or integrated in the pole itself. The photovoltaic panels charge a rechargeable battery, which powers a fluorescent orLED lampduring the night.

These lights provide a convenient andcost-effectiveway to light streets at night without the need of AC electrical grids for pedestrians and drivers. They may have individual panels for each lamp of a system, or may have a large central solar panel and battery bank to power multiple lamps.

Most solar panels turn on and turn off automatically by sensing outdoor light using a light source. Solar streetlights are designed to work throughout the night. Many can stay lit for more than one night if the sun is not available for a couple of days.
