Emulsifying is the process of mixing two liquids that are difficult to mix. The main focus of emulsifying is the dispersion of the discontinuous phase into preferably fine droplets. Rotor-stator machines are particularly well-suited for emulsifying tasks. The combination of high shearing and expanding forces in the mixing head allows for very fine droplets. High turbulences also enable rotor-stator machines to contribute to a quick transport of emulsifier molecules to the newly-formed surfaces.

Dry grinding creates a lot of dust which causes the need for proper filtering systems. This can be of particular importance during grinding of substances whose dust, when mixed with aerial oxygen, can result in explosive mixtures. Elaborate technical solutions such as systems for dust removal and inert gas overlay are often necessary to achieve the required level of safety. The cost for these filtration machines often significantly exceeds that of the actual mill. The resulting fine fraction is bonded directly in the suspension, so that a dust formation is avoided from the outset.The substances to be ground remain in the system, unlike dry systems, allowing for a significant reduction of losses. The IKA Conical Dryer CD is suited for vacuum contact drying of various humid solids of different free flowing behavior as well as different bulk densities. Not only the conical dryer's vessel wall and vessel cover are heatable but also the special spiral agitator. This ensures an optimal energy input into the product and also a uniform humidity and temperature distribution in the entire product area. Your bulk material is effectively dried at temperatures up to 200°C and under vacuum. The resulting solvent vapors are extracted by a reversible flow dust filter. The speed of the spiral agitator, which is located in an overhung position in the cover, is infinitely adjustable. A top-mounted flow breaker creates additional turbulences in the product area and prevents the product from rotating with the agitator. An optional lump breaker with cutting blades avoids the forming of agglomerates.

The high pressure homogenizer HPH is an inline dispersing machine for energy-efficient, continuous production of superfine emulsions. Compared to other IKA inline machines, the dispersing action of the high pressure homogenizer HPH is not based on the rotorstator principle. The even better homogenizing effect is achieved within the homogenizer by means of spontaneous decompression of the liquid from max. 2000 bar to an ambient pressure. With the same energy input, the IKA HPH produces considerably finer emulsions than conventional toothed ring dispersers. The use of high pressure homogenizers is recommended when a disintegration down to the nano range is required; however, these machines do achieve a smaller flow capacity than conventional dispersers. The high pressure homogenizer consists of a high pressure piston pump and a downstream homogenizing valve. The pressure build-up within the HPH occurs by means of one or more piston pump(s) which, with the help of ceramic pistons, ensure(s) a volume flow that is independent of pressure and virtually pulsation free. The desired homogenizing pressure can be infinitely adjusted. The pressure is reduced in a selected adjustable gap of the homogenizing valve. The quick pressure decrease in a moving medium leads to extremely high turbulences and cavitations, which then bring about the grinding of the raw product.
