Depending on the cause of the infertility, treatment will vary. For example, male infertility treatment will differ depending on the specific fertility problem. Male fertility treatments may or may not be surgical. Anatomical defects causing male infertility can be corrected by a vasoepididymostomy or a varicocelectomy. Both surgeries are effective infertility treatments for repairing physical flaws that inhibit male fertility. Male fertility treatment for a low sperm count or low sperm motility may include sperm retrieval and sperm preparation methods.

A vasectomy reversal, or vasovasostomy, is a surgical procedure to reconnect the tubes that are cut during a vasectomy (Figure 1). These tubes (called the vas deferens) are each about the size of a strand of spaghetti, and the channels in the tubes that conduct sperm are barely visible to the naked eye. Tubal ligation reversal is a procedure undertaken by women, who after having a tubal ligation decide they would like their fertility restored. Most commonly women have the procedure performed with the aim of becoming pregnant again, however the surgery may also be performed if a women is suffering from “post tubal ligation syndrome”, a condition which affects some women after having their tubes ligated and can cause many discomforting and potentially damaging symptoms. Tubal ligation reversal is a surgery preferred by many women as it allows pregnancy to occur naturally, as opposed to other fertility treatments such as “in vitro fertilisation”.

There are several causes of fertility problems in men. Infertility can be defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy after regular unprotected sex (without the use of any contraception) for at least a year. ‘Primary’ infertility means failure to achieve a first pregnancy, ‘secondary’ infertility means failure to achieve a subsequent pregnancy. Primary infertility is an extremely common problem, affecting more than one in seven (15 per cent) couples attempting their first pregnancy. Among those experiencing difficulty with conception, a male fertility problem is considered important in around 40 per cent of couples. In 15 per cent of couples it will be solely a male fertility problem and in around 25 per cent, there will be a problem in both partners.
