This is widely used for determination of closed cup Flash Point of Fuel Oil, cut back asphalts, other viscous material and suspension of solids having a flash point about 490C(1200F).The apparatus serve the purpose according to IP 34, ASTM-D-93-58T, IS-1448(P:I) 1960(P:21) and IS 1209/1958 method B. The J P T I unit consists of a base upon which bearing holders and driving motor is coupled. Bearing holder is provided for fitting various bearing to provide different conditions for test shafts, viz. both end fixed and one end free. A variac provided for speed control of driving motor. The unit demonstrates the phenomenon of whirling of shaft. After the test shaft cannot be used, hence unit only demonstrate the principle.

The J P T I unit consists of an epicyclic gear train. Gear train consist of an internal gear having 56 teeth two planet gears with 21 teeth each and sun gear having 14 teeth. The train is driven by a 3-ph/1-ph, 1440 R.P.M. motor giving maximum input torque of 0.5 kg/m. The planet carrier carries the planet gears. The internal gear is mounted over a flange which rotates in bearings. A pulley is mounted over a output shaft of internal gear. Torque measurement arrangement with spring balance is provided for both the internal gear and planet carrier, so that either or then can be held stationary and holding torque required for stationary member and output torque for the other member can be measured. The whole unit is mounted over a sturdy frame. Motor current is calibrated for output torque of the motor. A three channel R.P.M. indicator (digital) can be supplied with the unit at an extra cost which enables to determine the angular velocities of all the members. A digital torque indicator for motor output torque can be supplied at an extra cost, instead of motor current calibration.

Redwood viscometer apparatus are widely used in Petroleum Laboratories, Industries, Oil Refineries, Educational Institutions, and Research Organisations for standardisation and determines the Viscosity of Petroleum products, which flows in a Newtonian liquid except cut back Bitumen and road oils at the set temperature, they confirm to requirement of IP 70. Two adaption of Redwood Viscometers are available. The J.P.T.I unit consists of a three concentric pipes of a very small thickness as compared to diameter. They are arranged concentrically over two supports and closed with the help of two discs. The annual in between the cylinders are filled completely by two different insulating materials. Thermocouples at proper position are used to measure the temperature. Inside the inner pipe a nicrome wire heater is placed. Heat input to the heater is given through a variance and measured by a voltmeter and ammeter. The J.P.T.I. unit consists of a brass or aluminium fin of a circular cross section fitted across at one end of a long rectangular duct. The other end of the duct is connected to suction side of the blower and the air flows past the fin perpendicular to its axis. One end of the fin projects outside the duct & is heated by an electric heater. Temperature at five points along the length of the fin is measured by thermocouples. The blower is not run in natural convection condition while it is run in forced convection conditions. The air flow rate can be varied by control valve on delivery side of the blower.

The J.P.T.I. unit consists of a three slabs of different materials namely mild steel, wood & Bakelite. Nicrome heater is provided to supply heat input across these composite walls. Total heater assembly comprises of a heater bound between two aluminium plates, on both sides of this heater identical structures of composite wall are placed. Thermocouples are provided at proper position in the composite wall to record desired inside temperature of composite wall. Multichannel temperature indicator is used to measure this temperature. Small hand press provided to press the wall on each other & to ensure that no air gap remaining between two plates. This apparatus is used for penetration test on a wide variety of materials such as grease, Petroleum, Bitumen, Tar, Wax, Polish, food stuff, Rubber asphalts and pharmaceuticals Creams. A given force is applied over a given of a millimetre and expressed as penetration. It consists of a head support mounted on a vertical rod which can be adjusted for height. A rack and pinion and pointer assembly provides fine adjustment of a needle tip to sample and incorporates a slipping clutch mechanism which makes reading of Penetration and subsequent resetting of a sample and accurate operation. The dial is graduated from 0-400 in on tenth millimetre Sub Division. The instrument is supplied with two samples containers made of aluminium. The penetration is the distance in millimetre that a standard needle penetrates vertically into a sample of the material under fixed conditions of loading time and temperature. This instrument measures the reading on round dial fitted on a Aluminium Painted stand having adjustable penetration needle, holder sample container and transfer dish.

Stefan Boltzmann constant is determined from the temperature raise rate when blacked disc is inserted at the centre of disc from hemisphere by radiation & its temperature begins to rise.
